What a weird arse movie. My daughter convinced me to rent it. Filmed in Montegut, nominated for Oscars and only 93 minutes long it seemed like something I should probably see. The only way to describe it is Raising Arizona meets The Road Warrior meets Life of Pi. The lead is cute as a button and there are some genuinely funny parts but it was just strange.

I really wanted it to blow me away but it fell way short. It had zero staying power and I haven't recommended it to anyone. Still worth a Redbox though, and I can see how some viewers loved it's uniqueness.

I agree with everything you said . A lot of local patronage by the M/TV with this one as well. I just don't see it

There were a few moving scenes, sure. But all the Oscar talk about the little is kinda retarded, imo. I agree that not every kid can look that precocious and unscripted in front of a camera. I'd venture that most of her "performance" is owed to the work of a talented director

I rented it from a RedBox. Didn't care for the film, except for the big Arkansas Razorback like creatures at the end, but their presense didn't make any sense in relation to the rest of the movie.

I really liked the movie. Hushpuppy should have won the best actress Oscar.

eta: I think we need a "Beasts of the Southern Wild" versus "The Tree of Life" thread.... how one succeeds grandly in symbolism, imagery, and metaphor and how the other fails miserably.

Sony Pictures begs to differ. They've signed her to star in the remake of "Annie" to be released in 2014.

Oh. well that settles it then. A child actor that was in a very hyped movie is going to get another role. Who could see this coming?

so the director is the one with the talent and not the kid. What a dumbass, ignorant POS you are. I've watched that kid display that same type of spunky personality in everything she's done since that movie in interviews and all. But you can venture the movie is owed to the director.

Holy frick. you really enjoyed this movie huh

I was referring to the Oscar talk just because some little girl is adorable in some crappy, abstract, almost documentary styled movie. My personal opinion, of course

But ill watch it again with your mother next time I'm over. Maybe I missed something

Not the crappy movie idiot, I know you don't have much upstairs which is why I said you can credit the director for that shite, but you tryin to discredit a talented little girl by giving the same director credit is a joke.

Ok. I fricking give up. You're right. She's a rare, savant- like talent. As movie fans we can only hope they remake Nell one day so she can show Jodie foster its supposed to be done

Or you just logged on today with the intent of being a flaming frickboy

BEAST IT, BEAST IT, BEAST IT!

Say what you may, but that kid can act. I was hoping she won the Academy award, even though a lot of her role was narration, she was very convincing overall. I knew Jennifer was going to win and liked that, too, it was win-win. I wish I could have written the kid's acceptance speech if she did win. She had an opportunity to really hit hollyweird where it hurts because they all would have started saying she was too young...hadn't paid her dues...and she could have really told them at least she knew how to show how she loved her daddy...

She had to be thinking by about the end of those awards what a bunch of nuts she was in the room with at the time.

OR, she was thinking: when's this thing going to end and the ficking buffet is going to start so I can BEAST IT, BEAST IT, BEAST IT.

Back off those shellfish Tarantino or I'll set this house on fire - bitch!
