Kyle Martino, a former teammate who is now an analyst for NBC Sports, recalled the 2003 Confederations Cup in France, when a bomb threat forced the United States team to stay locked in its hotel. Donovan, Martino said, worked with the hotel staff and somehow arranged for the team to occupy a series of connecting rooms. He then opened all of the connecting doors and organized an Xbox video game tournament — Halo was the game of choice — which “turned the mood from us psyching ourselves out because of the scare to just relaxing,” Martino said.

Tim Cahill, a teammate at Everton who now plays with the Red Bulls in M.L.S., said he recalled Donovan being “free as a bird” in England and reveling in a situation that allowed him not to be the captain, not to be the team’s best player and not to be the perpetual focus.
Now I understand less why he didn't stay with Everton. I don't think he would have been a whole hell of a lot better but he obviously enjoyed. Maybe he just saw his loan spells at Everton just as vacation though.

He was Everton's best player during his first loan spell. He has lost some pace since that time, but he was really good. They love him there.

I so badly want him to go back before it's too late.

The chants of "USA USA" at Goodison Park were awesome. My memory may fail fail me, but I think he scored a game winner against Chelsea with a rocket into the top of the net. They love him there. The MLS's transfer policy is full retard.

Right before the US played England in the WC, too. That was the best part.
Donovan scored twice, once against Sunderland and once against Hull. The Hull goal was a rip.
He earned a penalty against Chelsea (which Saha missed) in which he owned the shite out of Carvalho who then took him down in the box. He also broke Ashley Cole's foot. Probably the best game of football ever played by a Yank abroad. Or maybe period
He also played well against Man City, Man U (I love that image of him just blazing past the old and slow Gary Neville), and Arsenal.
Seriously, no more proud/excited moment than waking up in the morning to see Donovan take on the PL and do pretty darn good.
