MT Guidance on Yearly Charitable Contributions

Can any of you provide me the right protocol for tracking charitable contributions in any given year, for tax keeping purposes?
Say I give 2 donations of $500 to a university. One being for athletics and the other $500 going towards a scholarship fund. What should I do upon each donation to make sure I get a tax benefit from it on next year's tax return?

they should give you some kind of receipt for your donation. hold on to it and take it to your tax preparer come tax time

Great, do you know of any references I can glance through to determine the amount of tax benefit I will receive?
