Can any of you provide me the right protocol for tracking charitable contributions in any given year, for tax keeping purposes?

Say I give 2 donations of $500 to a university. One being for athletics and the other $500 going towards a scholarship fund. What should I do upon each donation to make sure I get a tax benefit from it on next year's tax return?

Great, do you know of any references I can glance through to determine the amount of tax benefit I will receive?
