Jabari Greer's Contract Situation

quote:

4/22/2012: Signed a four-year, $21.1 million contract. The deal contains $11.3 million guaranteed, including a $5.3 million signing bonus and all of Greer's first-year base salary. Another $2 million is available through incentives. Greer is eligible for annual $100,000 workout bonuses throughout the contract's life. 2013: $3.6 million (+ $400,000 roster bonus), 2014: $4 million (+ $400,000 roster bonus), 2015: $4.2 million (+ $400,000 roster bonus), 2016: Free Agent

Can someone translate this if this is a cuttable contract, a reworkable contract like lofton and bunkley's or what can be done. IF we sign Nnamdi, then does it mean anything for Greer or not?

I don't think I'd want to cut our most consistent CB... Lewis and (possibly) NA seem valuable but haven't proven anything YET

re: Jabari Greer's Contract Situation

use the views from spotrac like HERE

the dead money column shows what has to be accounted for

so his base $3.6mil minus the dead $3.975 means it would only cost $375K to cut him.

Definitely cuttable if ya wanted or needed to. Not a bad value at $3.6mil IMO. Maybe if they needed the cap space for bringing in NA.

i love jabari, i hope he comes back to jabari form this year, kind of an off year last year. Just wonder when they spend bigger money on bringing in 2 other guys who are "starters" as well.

There's no way in hell I'm cutting Greer. I wouldn't even cut Robinson. They were horrible last year, but so was the entire defense.

so it wouldn't help us sign nnamdi by cutting jabari?

re: Jabari Greer's Contract Situation

Say hypothetically that Lewis and NA are both on the roster at that start of the season with no injuries. What happens if Keenan Lewis just doesn't work out? There is a certain level of risk involved with getting an "on the cusp of greatness" type of player. Yes, I think he will work out, but what if he doesn't? We could be wishing we had Greer back pretty early in the season.

Also, say one of these two guys gets a major injury and he is out for the season, what then? Move PRob in as number 2? We all saw how awful he was last year when Greer was out. We need a 3rd guy as nickel, and Greer fits the bill perfectly as a true starting nickelback and a rotational/situational guy at the position.

Oh, also, regarding the contract. He is guaranteed 11 million, we paid him 5 or so last year, wouldn't we have to pay him the remainder if he was cut? The only option would be trade him or keep him.

If we cut him, would all of the dead money count against this tear's cap? Or would it still stay spread out over 3 years?

I know. Maybe there's a reason I don't have a job as an NFL GM, but if I were numbers gaming, jokers like Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma, Roman Harper, Sed Ellis would all be looking for employment elsewhere.

I know what I will get with Greer and Robinson, and it's just too bad how they were isolated and burnt so badly because of a God awful front 7.

You can't always have a 20 million dollar what if player on the roster. What if Drew goes down? We still have Prob and corey White both are more the protypical long and sizeable corners that rob ryan likes to have. What if What if What if. What if we actually were prepared for what ifs last year. We still can draft a body in the draft as well.

re: Jabari Greer's Contract Situation

If a cut is before June 1st, I want to say dead money is immediately applied to the following year. I'm not a cap expert though.

but a june 1st cut, it'd be spread over 2 years thus saving 1.6 million this year?

I think you will see much better from P rob with not having to play as much zone next year.
While we can save cash by cutting Greer we need proven depth. Our div. is loaded will QB talent and skill at the WR positions. Unless they graded Greer very low after reviewing his year I think he will be back. His cap hit is minimal.

And we can get another Corey White or Usama Young like that too. We know what to expect with Greer, he has been the only guy in the secondary that knows how to at least cover in the same zip code of his receiver. I don't consider him a "what if" player. In a passing league you need 3 starting corners.

$3.6 mil is really cheap for a consistent starting corner.

For once I think Loomis actually did okay with this contract. (edit: a defensive contract)

quote:

2014: $4 million (+ $400,000 roster bonus), 2015: $4.2 million

Better than 7 million for Harper 2 years in a row. Don't get me wrong, I like Harper and I still think Loomis is the man. But thats a lot of cheddar.

I agree with what you're saying, and it seems like a good problem to have IF we get them all
