The NBA's young (25 and younger) big men

people always like to talk about how the NBA in today's game doesn't have good big men, so i thought i'd make a list of young (and i'm saying 25 and under, b/c that should catch move before their prime) NBA big men to show that the NBA has basically an embarrassment of riches
Tier 1: Stars/Production of Stars
Kevin Love
Blake Griffin
DeMarcus Cousins
Greg Monroe
Brook Lopez
Serge Ibaka
Tier 2: Emerging Stars/Good Players
Anthony Davis
Kenneth Faried
Danilo Galinari
Illyasova
Ryan Anderson
Tier 3: Showing lots of Promise
Drummond
Tobias Harris
Enes Kanter
Tristan Thompson
Vucevic
Larry Sanders
Koufos
Montejunas
Valenciunas
don't get too caught up in the tiers, and if i missed somebody please feel free to alert me. i kind of causally was looking through some lists. but there are lots of guys who have established themselves before the age of 26 with a BIG group who can take the jump to that really good/star tier
i just don't see why people act like the NBA has no big men and no future big men

I really miss an offense that was run through the big man. You see all this 5 out looks now-a-days...I miss having the big man in the middle!
Closest thing to it now is..Lopez or Howard. Cousins likes to stretch his game, but plays very well down low.
Its sad, Howard could be doing shaq like games, but he's a pussy...(sorry for the wording...)

no way, jose

unless another shaq emerges, this just isn't an efficient offense nowadays. you would probably love the grizzlies though

quote:its not b/c hes a pussy. its b/c hes never had a refined offensive game like shaq did. hes more of a D/rebounder with some offense. not better or worse. just different

we're just talking about young bigs, and they're all really, really good players

add robin lopez to showing a lot of promise

Add Ed Davis to one of the two bottom tiers

Without looking at the stats, isn't Robin Lopez having a pretty good year compared to his times in Phoenix?

a true top tier big man would have their teams better than where Monroe/Pistons & Cousins/Sactown are
Brook Lopez offensively is a good post man. He just rebounds like a bitch.
then you have to force Gallinari, Ryan Anderson and Illyasova into the 2nd tier, i dont really consider them big men. at all.

cousins is too volatile to ever be a true franchise player.
i dont know/dont hear much about monroe. but hes in his 3rd NBA season and doesnt get alot of love.
maybe im thinking of it the wrong way, but i dont see anyone else on this list (save griffin, whos still got a ways to go) being a star on a multi ring team. theyll all likely get some huge max deal b/c the association is desperate for bigs, but i dont see the top of this list as some mouth watering proof that the big man isnt gone in today's game

i hated blake griffin until a few months ago. he's even hitting his FTs now. he's a machine 24+ PER
monroe/cousins are both 22 years old. both have consistent PERs in the 19-20 range
i don't think anybody should be criticizing lopez and his nearly 25 PEP
all of these guys, except lopez, are also great facilitators for big men. that's an important part of the big man game in the neo-NBA

they've both played the 4 the vast majority of their NBA minutes
they're stretch 4s. the future of the 4 in today's game

that's his only flaw (he's good protecting the rim on defense), but that's also a function of having 2, 4s who do nothing but rebound. why waste their efforts or his energy? that's efficiency

i never said these guys were superstars. it's going to be really hard for a big man to be a superstar in today's game
the NBA is a driving/shooting league now. that's going to take usage away from big men

being a star on a multi ring team.
rings are team stats.
and look at what happened to superstar bosh when he went to the heat. his usage and stats went down a good bit
big men are not featured on great teams in today's NBA
