| Why did NOLA build a massive jail right next to the interstate? Rather than move (Posted on 3/16/13 at 3:11 am)
Seems silly that the first thing people see driving into the city is a giant jail. That land has to be worth a ton. Why didn't they sell and move it to the East? I have never seen a city jail so large. Twice in the last week I was asked by a visitor with me what that construction was and both were shocked when I said it's a jail. Just seems like a crap location.

As it should be. It's NOLA's staple, her cash cow, her pride and joy.

That property was deeded to the city and can never be sold. The city could have built something different but can not sale.

did not know this. It's not a bad looking jail. It's just so massive. Hopefully they let the prisoners paint the walls again, that used to be cool when it changed every month. That was under Foti though. He also had that haunted house in city park.

I did not know this. I pass it several times a week. It's pretty cool to see the modular cell units being flown in place. It seems as if each unit is mostly finished out on the interior. They are precast concrete units that are set, post tension cables stressed and grouted, then the next one goes beside it and above in a building block type pattern. It will be one helluva jail. They damn sure need it, as there is an escaped prisoner every other day or so now.

yeah seeing that many are kept in 'tents' lol Those pre-fab cells look like something out of 'Supermax' In a perfect world I would move all projects to the east, and the jail, and keep property value low there, then gentrify the heck out of the rest of the city.

They are pretty much finished on the inside and pre wired as well. All they really have to do is put the door on and it's ready to roll. The company that made them used our property and batch plant. It's quite the operation.

The criminal court is right behind the jail. They wouldn't move the jail to far away from the court house, way to much transportation.

They built it there in hopes that if someone escapes they'll hitch a ride right the frick out of town and become someone else's problem.

Why did NOLA build a massive jail right next to the interstate? Rather than move it to the Westbank

It may look large, but it only has 1438 beds. That gives it an operational capacity of 1250 or so. Wait till the determination has to be made of which of the current 2600 inmates need to be released.

You should ask alot of questions about the government of New Orleans like why the frick are they building housing projects every where? Why are food trucks not allowed anywhere? Why do musicians on the street have curfews?

I don't know where else you think they should build it. New orleans east makes the most sense though.

Because it's replacing that massive dump that sits behind it.. Plus most major cities have large jails downtown, however they look like office buildings. For example Birmingham {jefferson county} jail Sits smack in the heart of the financial district
