Carbon buildup on throttle body, how do I get rid of it?

The wife's '11 Chevy Equinox has been running a little rough lately. Took it to one shop, they didn't have a clue and just threw parts at it with no change. They changed Mass Air Flow Sensor and spark plugs, then said take it to Chevy dealership. Guy at dealership says the error code says that the engine is running rich, which is caused by the throttle body having carbon buildup. Will Sea Foam or Lucas fuel additive take care of it, or should I let them do the $170 whatever it is they do?

Seafoam with an old toothbrush and elbow grease.
It'll take 20 minutes. That rig doesn't seem old enough to have that much carbon built up.

How many miles does it have on it?

Look on some forums online to see how to take it off. Once you get it off, use brake fluid or B12 Chemtool.
I did this exact thing on my Envoy and it smoothed out the idle. I think the buildup prevents the valve from openning smoothly and closing entirely.
It is very surprising to me that people don't use forums for things like this. That's like the entire reason I ended up becoming an OBer.

Seafoam Deep Creep spray. Spray it, let soak, clean off. I also spray it into the intake manifold and let it sit for about an hour.

Has about 50k miles on it.
I haven't done much work with engines, but I'm pretty sure I could do this myself for a hell of a lot less than the dealership.

Why isn't it under warranty?

Man that just doesn't seem like its old enough or been driven enough to have that much carbon to throw a code.

Bought it used and the Ford dealership I got it from didn't offer any warranty.

No. Need to do a high pressure injector clean. Alot of Equinoxs had timing chain issues as well..could be why it's running rough. As long as you still have warranty there's no need to go anywhere other than a dealer..
ETA: didn't notice the mileage, still wouldn't hurt to call a dealer and check for recalls/bulletins

This is what I was thinking also. She's put about 20k on it in the last year.

That actually is being covered under the Chevy powertrain warranty.

My old man has an 04 xterra with 120k on it. We just cleaned the throttle body for the first time. Had a decent amount of carbon, but nothing major. And he drives the piss out of it.
Where are you located?

Quality of gas (cheaper isnt alwys better) could increase the chance of a carbon build up..

Live in NC.
Here's what I don't get. If it is carbon build up from gas, why won't something like Lucas Oil fuel system cleaner fuel additive get rid of it? Like I said, I'm an engine ruhtard, so please splain it to me.

The throttle body draws air from the intake through the air filter. The fuel doesn't get introduced until the air already passes the throttle body.
So basically, you're not directly spraying the dirty area with a fuel additive.
