Why don't more conferences award automatic bids to reg season champs?

I don't understand the logic for a smaller conference to NOT award its regular season champ with an automatic bid. You've proven yourself throughout the course of the season, you won your conference. Then, during some flukey 3 day tourny, you drop a heartbreaker to the 4th best team in your conference and now you're out of the big dance.
Seems like these conferences would want to be represented in the tourny by their best team, no?

It's kind of illogical. The season is just a long tournament.
But they want the excitement of the tournament.

I think you make a meritorious argument.

don't some conferences essentially give the reg season champs a bye all the way to the semis?
I'd take it a step further: reg season champs get a bye all the way to the finals, and they get home court advantage.

Because they want the check ESPN will cut them.

I think so. I can promise these smaller conferences would never have their championship games on ESPN though if they weren't playing for an NCAAt bid.

Pretty much anytime you find yourself asking "why do they do this" in college athletics, the answer is always money.

I agree. I guess the tournament's make money, but still, seems like you would want your "best" representing, unlike WKU last year or Liberty this year.
The Big Sky, who now has 11 teams only lets 7 into the tourney.
Basically, the No 1 and hosting team plays the lowest remaning seed of 3 prelim games.
It should be done this way.

still think that a 14-16 team from a scrub conference that gets a 16 seed and gets drubbed in the first round does your conference a disservice.
I like the way the NAIA does it. Most of the "major" conferences get 2 automatic bids. One for the regular season champ and one for the tourny champ. If the regular season champ wins the tourny, than the tourny runner up gets the auto bid
ETA: perhaps the smaller conferences could literally give the reg season champ an automatic spot in the finals of the conference tourney. Thus maintaining an exciting event while still stacking the odds in your champ's favor. I dunno

They should make the tourney champs play the reg season champs in a 3 game series.
Even more $$$ and better idea of who should go

It probably does, but chances are the regular season champ from that conference would probably get beaten too. The disservice done when a 14-16 team gets waxed is nowhere near a big enough pain to give up the big money from the conference tournament TV deals they get.

As with everything in college sports its about the money. I like that alot of conference are giving their reg season champ a bye to the semis.
As someone who follows the smaller conferences, giving an auto bid to the reg season champ would create alot of interesting scenarios during the final week.
See the ivy league this year.

it would also make January games more meaningful...
my idea for the power conferences is to exempt the top two teams from a conference tourney since they should be getting in anyway. it gives more chance for a school that needs the automatic bid to win it

the simple answer is money... the smaller conferences use their tournament as major source of income, i imagine.
