Steelers rumored to release Harrison- should we

sorry if this has been already brought up, but I didn't see it on the first page.
He'd be expensive, and Goodell would consider the move a match made in hell (I can only imagine the conversations between Vilma and Harrison if they were on the same team), but:
we did have the worst defense in the league. He is comfortable in the scheme the Saints claim they want. We'd move from crappy to above-average at linebacker overall, if we can keep the other guys too.
And just on the anti-Goodell note, I'd laugh if we picked up one of Goodell's most-hated players. It'd be a multi-million dollar "f--- you" to the commish

Dude will be 35... 1 yr deal at the most.

Now this is a guy that I think could help the team. He's been playing in a 3-4 for years and could provide some experience in the transition.
However, he's gonna want way too much money. Someone will overpay for him and I doubt its us.

who's gonna pay a a35 yr old huge money? His numbers have come down and hasn't been healthy for a whole season in a couple years.

Dammit Chad are you for or against signing him? State your case so I can go on the other side of it.

I like it. He's not gonna command much with the injuries and age.

I can be for it for a 1 year cheapo deal but at the same time, i'm not expecting much production wise. Leads me to just rather spend the money on a younger maybe more productive player.

he was not the same player last year, although it was due to injuries. I think this is actually a good signing, but only at a 1-2 year deal. He brings attitude, experience and hopefully a good game.

He's actually one of the more productive 34+ year olds on the Defensive side of the ball.. I wouldnt mind having his talent for a year or two for the right price while we make the 3-4 transition... However, I really really dislike this guy as a character.

If the price is right

Wasn't aware that he was that old, I was thinking early 30's. That makes a bit of a difference; but I think any big moves are going to be in the mindset of getting Brees back to the Superbowl. In that case, the older player beginning to fade may be better short-term than the young guy not ready to peak for a couple years.
I think his declining numbers are in part due to his increased frustration with the continual fines and crap he took from Goodell. He spoke of quitting a couple times.
While we all know Payton rarely influences the defense, I think that based on shared experiences with the commish, Payton would be Harrison's ideal coach. Kind of a shared "frick that guy" perspective.

I would rather Shawn Phillips, age 31 and about the same price.

This is actually a solid should we. One year deal at the most and I don't think he would command that much dough. He's been in a 34 forever and could definitely drop some knowledge for our guys

ya know, the more I think about it, the more I think that we might have a good chance to get him.
Consider- I mentioned the shared "screw Goodell" mindset between Harrison and Payton; I would guess Loomis has that too. So if Harrison and his agent sat down in a room with Payton and Loomis, 3 of the 4 guys might express their huge aggravation with the commish, while the 4th guy (the agent) would try to keep emotions out of the negotiations. Pretty sure Harrison would come away from that meeting saying that if the Saints are close in price, that is his preferred choice and favorite people.

you do realize that the stupid threads don't stop on draft day? also, this is a legitimate "should we" thread, so there's no need to group this into the 43 dozen other worthless ones

Draft day will bring legitimate conversation, every player released by their team? Not so much
