How long will it take for me to be able to blow a duck call worth a damn?

I am making a hunting comeback this fall, I havent hunted much at all in the last 10-12 years. When I did, we always had guys that were pretty good at getting the ducks close, but I dont want to count on anyone for that this year. I bout a few decent calls and I'm gonna start practicing in the truck and at the house when I'm bored. How long does it usually take to be effective at this?

You either have the tone and rhythm in your head or you dont. Of course, from now till duck season, you can sharpen your skills. But you need to listen to ducks , and record yourself from about 20ft away from where you are blowing to see if you sound anything like them. YOu also need to shut up more than blow, regardless of how good you are. There is nothing worse than sitting in the blind with a "hi baller"

You can easily be ready for duck season. I'm no expert but once you've mastered the quack it's all easy from there. Keep em in your car and do it while you're driving. It doesn't take a competition caller to get ducks to come down

You have plenty of time to be good enough before duck season. You don't need to sound like a pro to kill ducks. Get a good CD and practice your arse off

I learned in a couple of months and would cal myself proficient, not an expert, but decent enough to make the ducks look my way. The best things I did were 1) find some youtub videos of phil robertson blowing a duck call, 2) get an accomplished duck caller to critique what I'm doing, and 3) sit on a lake with large numbers of ducks and listen to them quack for hours.

I respectfully disagree.

Yea you may be able to blow the call descent in a week or two, but actually calling ducks and knowing how to blow a call are two totally different things.

Well he won't be Rick Dunn but if the OP practices every day for two weeks he shoould be to the point where he can call in a few ducks. Now knowing when to call, how aggressive to be, etc...of course he won't know that. But calling in not as hard as alot of people make it out to be.

Tip #1: When in doubt, don't call.

Tip# 2 Never ever call at a duck coming toward you or on top of you. Call at their tails or when they are banking.

This. Always, always, always keep this in mind. So many hunters want to call them all the way to the water/field.

I am of the school that it is more about when you call rather than how it sounds.

Not sure what yall call a high ball but I often blow my call as loud as possible.

LSUballs can verify this.

I agree with that. Made those up years ago when hunting flooded rice fields near Holmwood. They were deadly once the birds noticed the movement.

90% of you should keep quiet. I shut up. You should too.

Thanks for the adivice guys. I have been watching some vids and downloaded the duck call app on my phone to learn the different sounds. I usually pick up pretty quick with these kinds of things, but we will see. If you have any more advice or tips I should really work on before next season, it would be appreciated.

When you think you are hidden put more brush on the blind. If you're gonna be watching/calling ducks make sure your face isn't being seen. The best duck caller in the world can't overcome a duck that sees something that isn't right.
