Boy Scouts launch 65 mile high-adventure kayak trek through Atchafalaya Basin

About 150 Boy Scouts from across the country will make the 65 mile "Swamp Trek" trip this summer as part of a new high-adventure program. Scouting officials hope the program will instill Louisiana pride in local Scouts and introduce the Atchafalaya Basin to new adventurers.
"It's a pretty amazing trip," said Brice Nepveux, 17, a junior at Crowley High School.
The Evangeline Area Council, which represents Boy Scouts in Acadiana's eight parishes, is now working to raise $21 million to make the "Atchafalaya Swamp Base" both a jewel of Scouting and a state treasure.

Sounds like the makings of a horror movie, 150 Boy Scouts enter, only 3 make it out alive...

planting trees, picking up trash.... its like prison work.

So they just yack everywhere? They would get a much better idea if what the basin is about on foot. Most of it can be easily walked

The "Swamp Trek" option offered through the "Swamp Base" is a 65 mile kayak trip with some side outings when they scouts stop for the night / day. They'll hike a little bit, but it's not backpacking like at Philmont. Part of the reason they wanted to offer kayaking is because there's apparently fewer options for scouts to do this type of high adventure.
It's all also part of a 100 year commitment to use and improve the Atchafalaya Basin, so they intend to expand the program and offer more options in the future. This year is just the first real run (last year was a pilot trek).
As for a horror movie, wickowick, I can tell you that one of the scouting leaders I talked with wants to incorporate some good folklore, ghost type stories into the trek. Local community members, like folklorists from UL, will assist with those non-paddling parts of the trek.
And, Chad504boy, while planting trees and picking up trash may not be your ideal job, the scouts I've talked with have had a blast doing it -- they get to get muddy, be outside with friends, learn some cool stuff, etc. Personally, I'd be happy to take a job doing that stuff if it was comparable pay to my current gig, haha

i work with an eagle scout that works with the high adventure group and I know he was saying the group of boys he works with out of Houston was looking at doing this trek this summer.

Why they so high? Did they have to drug them?

Well, there are definitely some Houston scouts taking the trip this summer!
