| Question for the doctors, med and pre med students out there...... (Posted on 3/5/13 at 10:29 pm)
Is the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine worth sending my daughter to attend? It ain't cheap.

Never heard of it. Finishing residency in June so I'm fairly recent in the applications/admissions process.

Good luck in your future. Probably the worst time in history to become a doctor. I hope your in it to help people, if not, you have a long road ahead of you.

No. Do volunteer work and join a pre-professional club at uni when she goes.

Skip the pre-professional club and tell her to join clubs that she is actually interested in. Med schools are all about well-rounded applicants these days and many pre-meds lack significant extracurriculars outside of pre-med/science.

Thank you. Going back home to Beaumont to do anesthesiology. Won't be as exciting as Nashville/Vanderbilt, but it's home and I'm really looking forward to being back home with friends and family. I love what I do and think I'll do just fine financially. Maybe could find higher paying jobs in bigger cities, but it's hard to beat coming home. Plus it's hard to beat the cost of living. I actually didn't even look anywhere else.

Hijacking. Tell me about residency please. I am an aspiring doctor.

I agree with this. And you have to know when it's time to buckle down and study hard, but also make time for fun/boozing too.

Tell your daughter to enjoy being young while she still can. All that honor society, leadership, etc bull shite is not worth it.

I wouldn't do it. Just tell her to join clubs, get a lot of volunteer hours, and some sort of patient interaction to show on her resume. Some research hours wouldn't hurt either.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. It's definitely been hard work, but I will probably look back on it and say it was some of the most exciting times of my life. A 24 hour shift with no sleep is no big deal anymore, but I've never known any other way. I've never worked a post college "real job." I think it helps that I like what I do and like the city I'm in. I'm sure it could be miserable if you didn't enjoy the city/hospital you were working in or it was too expensive to enjoy. Residents make like 50K a year before taxes, which would be living thin in places like New York, Boston, San Francisco. Also, I'm single and have no kids which I think would make working the long hours harder if I had family here.

Doing the ahec summer program would be a more cost effective thing to do

A good preprofessional organization like an active AED chapter will do all that.

I went to some medical school thing at Tulane back in high school. They aren't really worth it. Not really sure what the NYLF on Medicine is though. I'd say no. If she is interested in medicine and just wants to see some things, ask someone you know at your local hospital if she can shadow them. Getting to see some surgeries when I was younger was fun and interesting. Thats about all I can give you.
