The CST announcer called Chris Cotton a "self-made pitcher". I'm ignorant to this. Anyone know what it means specifically about him?

I'm assuming it's because he started out as a walk-on and wasn't even traveling with the team.

As of last season, he still wasn't on scholarship, bot sure if that changed this season.

Gotcha. I assumed he played a different position but ultimately wanted to be a pitcher and so worked himself into the position

He tried out before the season a few years ago. Had to wear his high school clothes during practice up until the season. He brought it and made the team.

It means all the other pitchers are simply robots, they don't have to practice or anything.

I think what he means is that he is not physically gifted and does not throw in the 90's like a lot of SEC pitchers. But has worked his butt off to learn his craft and not only make this team but be a very important part of it I think he is a pitcher not a thrower like a lot of pitcher are now

Cotton graduated from Byrd in '09 as one of the top pitchers in the state. Regardless of his great senior campaign he was not heavily recruited and decided to give walking on a shot when he arrived at LSU. Like tiger79 said Chris is a pitcher not a thrower. He has average velocity but his control and movement on his pitches clearly makes up for the average speed.

Exactly. Through mutual friends I've met his family a couple times. Great family and an easy guy to root for.

He is a college version of Maddux or Glavine. Those 2 guys had decent velocity when they were younger. Cotton has below average velocity for a division I pitcher in my opinion. He reminds me more of Lane Mestepay or Jason Determan.
