I honestly don't know a whole lot about handguns but I've been wanting to get one for awhile now. price range is around 650. Went to Jims yesterday and the guy behind the counter recommended either a S&W or FN 40 or 45. Any help would be appreciated

You should at least hold them all and see which one(s) feel the best to you.

Caliber? shite, opinions vary a lot between 9mm, 40 and 45.

I'm clearly a Glock fan as you can tell by my user name, but the Smith M&P Series is a quality gun, as well as the Sig P series which could all be found in your price range. The Sig might be a little harder to find new at that price, but you can find used ones all day in that range.

Joe says that's all you need, just go out on the balcony with it.

one of my buddies really recommends a glock. Is there really that much of a difference between brands?

I'm not a Glock expert, and don't own one, but I'm pretty sure they don't have a safety. I don't know about recommending one to someone as a first gun.

I'm sure I'll get picked apart regarding this suggestion, but that's just my $0.02.

Glock, Springfield XD, SMith & Wesson M&P, Beretta PX4 Storm. Hold all of these, buy the one that feels right.
