Royal Purple vs. Mobil 1

Just wondering if anyone uses Royal Purple in their autos or boats and what is the advantage over a full synthetic like Mobil 1. I know it is supposed to be way better but is it?

re: Royal Purple vs. Mobil 1
Yeah I figured, I was just wondering, with all the synthetics and blends. I use Mobil 1 and was just wondering. Well I just found this in a corvette forum:

Anyhow the results looked really good and both oils looked good after 4000 miles on each sample.. It was pretty much equal between both Mobil 1 and Royal purple.. I had the TBN done on both samples.. This test shows just how much life is left in the oil.. The higher the number, the more life you have in the active ingredients.. anything less than 2.0 means its time for an oil change.
The Mobil 1 5w-30 had a TBN of 3.9 at 4000 miles and Royal Purple had a TBN number of 2.6 after 4000 miles.. So what does this mean?? The Mobil 1 had more life left in it.. I could go to around 7000 miles on a change.. The DIC read 30% oil life remaining when I changed the oil at 4000 miles on both samples which is right on Par with the TBN number.. The Royal Purple had a lower TBN number than the Mobil 1.. So I suspect maybe 5000-6000 miles of total life from Royal Purple, before it goes under the 2.0 TBN number..

You can't go wrong with Amsoil, Mobil-1, or Royal purple. Just get a Wix filter (napa Gold) and a quality synthetic oil and you'll be fine. Keep your oil change intervals reasonable.

Out of the 3 I prefer Mobil 1 because of the availability. I can pick it up at Walmart while I am grabbing some ammo.

Truck is still under warranty and will be for a long time so I take it in to the dealership to be serviced. They wanted $10 a quart for Mobil 1 I told them they were crazy and I will bring my own for them to change it with.

My car goes 15k miles between oil and filter changes on full synthetic 5w-30. Castrol is the recommended brand though.

You're an idiot. Do you even know what you are talking about?

Order of operations goes:
Amsoil
Royal Purple
Castrol synthetic

For gear oil, Royal Purple can't be beat.

Mobil is a semi-synthetic even though it is labeled fully synthetic. Don't believe me, do some research

Amsoil is the best but can't find it locally. Royal Purple would be great for that turbo beast of a truck you drive.

re: Royal Purple vs. Mobil 1
I use RP for gear oil. It held up fine in my old Tacoma for 60k. Still looked like the day I bought it. Also used Redline transmission fluid, but they don't make it for autos, so no go anymore

Amsoil sells their oil online I believe. I have a brochure with prices from them. I wanted to get one of those extra oil filter kits, but don't have the room

Eta: My grandpa worked at Mobil as an engineer for 30 years and uses Castrol Syntec now.

re: Royal Purple vs. Mobil 1
You could ask that guy Bob (the oil guy, not account temp). He seems to know a lot about this stuff.

Mobil 1 is a perfectly acceptable oil if you change your oil frequently (<6-7k) and aren't harsh on your engine. A quality filter is more important. I use Mobil because its a good oil, and easily available for cheap.

re: Royal Purple vs. Mobil 1
Stay away from RP for anything that you need to be reliable. It's great in race cars because of it's low viscosity, but it does not have the same wear protection as other synthetics. I have seen countless transmissions and rear ends go to crap because of RP and it isn't worth the extra cost in your engine.

Amsoil is only really worth it if you get their 25k mile oil and change the filter at 12.5k miles.

re: Royal Purple vs. Mobil 1
My trucks get hard usage and I have had zero problems with RP at 60k intervals.

LSUTigerME, Castrol Syntec is better than the new Mobil one oils
