I'm new to pistols and am not going to be shooting it all the time. Does anyone know anything about the Smith & Wesson SDVEs? they come in a .40 or a 9mm. Or can someone recomend a differnet starter? I don't really want to spend more than $450.

Cheap, you'd be better off getting a better quality pistol. Beretta's PX4 storm are kind of close to your range, especially online deals.

Good to see the Ruger worked out for you so well.

Go to YouTube and find my channel bigapple0828. I made a video recently addressing this question. I'd link it for you but I'm on my phone. I'll link it when I'm home if you can't find it.

I got a S&W Sigma .40 a few years back as my first pistol. It has served me well.

If your starter pistol is going to be used to learn how to safely shoot and handle a handgun, I'd consider a revolver or semi-auto in 22 LR. My Taurus 9 shot 22LR revolver prolly has more rounds down it than my other handguns. Plus, 22LR ammo (IF you can find it) is MUCH cheaper than 9mm, 40, 45, etc.

Re: the S&W SD/VE's (formerly called "Sigma"), there seems to be a lot of variation in quality control. Some run just fine, but others have a lot of problems. In addition, it's hard to get a handle on the situation because lots of folks still refer to the newer guns as "Sigma." S&W has put this product line through a number of upgrades through the years, as well. From what I read, although the SD/VE is not as nice a gun as others, it's much improved over the old "Sigma." OTOH, what can reasonably expect out of a $350 gun?
