quote:

'Realistically, it's not going to be a problem because I don't think we're going to win against Swansea.'

A ringing endorsement for the boys on the eve of the biggest game of their lives.

So the travel expenses are more than your team gets paid for the early rounds?

that's kinda sad.

The Sun is the only place I've seen that quote. The story is true, though.

ETA: Other outlets are saying the same thing now.

I think that is the right decision thought. They cannot afford all of that.

3 qualifying rounds...BEFORE playoff round...BEFORE group round!

It's insane, financially disastrous too.

not to mention if they go 2 and out, they will hurt the English coefficient that keeps them having 4 teams in the Champions League and give a boost to someone who might take that spot

you have to feel bad for the players, but it's a business

Yeah, but once really wouldn't hurt enough to make any difference. All the top leagues have even a top team here and there that just completely writes off Europa and bows out at the beginning with a bunch of scrubs and 16 year olds.

You have to be like Serie A and have 2+ clubs do it almost every year for a while to begin to make a difference.

That Europa even counts in those arbitrary league coefficients is next to absurd. League coefficients must be five times more arbitrary than even the International ones and that's saying a lot.

Yeah, if they qualify, you'd hope that maybe some sponsorship deal could be worked out just for the Europa matches since their story is generating some interest.

However, even first division clubs have long complained about the amount of money clubs lose money playing Europa and all simply to risk falling in their domestic league tables, which can cost millions more if it means missing a CL berth.
