| Watching old Siskel & Ebert Reviews (Posted on 2/17/13 at 5:07 pm)
for some reason i never thought to go look up S/E reviews of movies. man after watching some of these Gene Siskel was a total pussy. I could only imagine what he would say about movies today (especially post-Japanese invasion and post-gore porn genre) post some good ones that you find Die Hard (Ebert haaated it) Evil Dead (Panned by both. Siskel would hate movies today) Se7en (Siskel bitches about gore again) Jurassic Park (Ebert doesn't feel there is a "sense of aw" or "majesty" with the dinos) Aliens (Ebert thinks it was "overkill" and didn't want his friends to see it. Siskel gives a thumbs down b/c he's a total pussy)

Both were total hacks. Ebert was a shitty critic from a writing standpoint, too.

While I respect Roger Ebert's experience in revewing movies, he gets it wrong pretty often. 2 stars for Clockwork Orange comse to mind as one of his worst. I saw he gave a mere 3 stars to In the Mood for Love, should be 4 no question. Came across this recently (maybe from this board): Ebert's Worst Reviews

The ultra-democratic (in the Athenian sense) internet seems to be killing the entire idea of "critics". I now have a forum -- I'll give my opinion on the MTV board or my blog, and it's out there along with the latest review by the critic of the New Yorker. And just as good too! And sometimes -- maybe it is.

it's the dissemination of information critics were seen as valuable when they (1) had more information/knowledge of movies than us and (2) we believed they had superior judgment/expertise. the internet has destroyed a lot of the mythos of expertise in general

and yeah, that once those lucky few gained the role of "expert" previously, they could just mail it in at that point. now their reviews will not be forgiven or forgotten and they have to keep it up or adapt (like armand williams)

The Shining and A Clockwork Orange were panned by a lot of critics when they first came out in theaters. In fact, some actors even boycotted the Oscars the year A Clockwork Orange was nominated because of its subject matter and the fact that it wasn't nearly as highly regarded today as it was then. Some movies are like a bottle of wine….they taste better as the years go by.

Neither are especially highly regarded today aside from Kubrick fans (admittedly, there are a lot of those)

I liked A Clockwork Orange and felt like The Shining was merely okay. For a horror movie it's pretty standard stuff. The only thing that really stood out for me was Jack Nicholson's performance. Beyond that I never really got the hype.

I remember them being so big in the 80's - because before Rotten Tomatoes...they were IT. People would say..."we need to see this...Siskel and Ebert liked it." - This usually meant it must be good because their shtick was being split. Their TV show seemed to be always on. I always thought Ebert just loved everything and Siskel was more discriminating and sophisticated as a child. Now after reading Eberts blog as an adult and looking back...I'm realizing that Siskel just hated pretty much everything that was commercially successful.

Not true at all regarding ACO. It's consistently on every critic's list of the top 100 films, AFI, etc. The Shining you are right about

Ebert is the hack's hack. And when he dabbles in politics it really gets sordid.

Maybe I should have said it is consistently on many critics' lists. I do know that it has been on both AFI 100 greatest lists and the BFI 100 greatest films list, and is currently top 150 on the IMDB 250
