Interesting perspective.

Boyz N Tha Hood was his only good movie

Man, that interview just about sums up singleton. He has such an overinflated view of himself adn acts like he's this transcendent black filmmaker. Give me a break. He does have some good thoughts and insight on Django though

Rosewood was actually "solid"

Four Brothers was actually entertaining.

Higher Learning was a very interesting "Racial/College Experience" movie.

The character of Remy was tragic.

Good lawd the asshurt in that dude

Thats one of the few times you'll hear the black equivalent of "i have a friend who's black" before qualifying a negative comment

Obviously being a millionaire black film director is not nearly enough progress in the last 50 years for some people. But I'm grateful to know now that django wasn't a serious film at least

I can't say I disagree a whole lot with anything he said.

Four Bros. was lame.

Higher Learning is like some joke.

He's an average filmmaker - who got a gig/huge break right out of film school because he had a script for a story that Hollywood was into exploiting at that time with gangsta rap music booming on the scene and following up on the hit of Colors. It was the perfect story for the late 80's/early 90's. He's like an author who writes one good book that hits the right note for its time and then publishes crap thereafter.

He screwed up the Pulp Fiction quote. It's not, "You know what they call a Big Mac in Amsterdam?". . . It's, "You know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in Paris?"

No, JS, they wouldnt give you $100 mil to make a slave movie because it would suck.

I love how he intimates how QT stole his idea when it was completely different than what he did.

well the damn hughes brothers got $80M to do book of eli, so i don't know what he's talking about

spike lee got $33M in 1992 to do Malcolm X

singleton got $46M to do shaft in 2000 and $76M to do 2Fast2Furious

and fwiw, QT didn't start having really big budgets until inglorious basterds...and (1) he's been a LOT more commercially successful than singleton and (2) he's been harvey weinsteins bitch/bff for like 15 years

yeah Singleton acting like he's not allowed to make big budget movies is ridiculous. He definitely comes off as a dbag in this interview.

he wasn't just talking about himself. he was talking about black directors in general

singleton is just a bitter director who tries to make movies in a niche market and then blames outside forces for his failures. i love how he keeps bringing up rosewood in that article when it was pretty average-bad

singleton's biggest problem is that he makes bad movies, which is a problem since he's a director

Yeah does he really think studios are racist because they're not lining up to bankroll movies like Baby Boy. The idea is to make money.
