Had a layover in Juneau when I went to Fairbanks back in 87. Delta Airlines had bought out Western the season before, and my dad went up for a couple weeks to train folks and made some friends. We went up the following yr in August and did some fishing for Grailing about 50 miles out of Fairbanks for a few days.
I still remember when we landed, I thought it was about 5:30 in the evening. It was a long flight, lost track of time and we rode the sunset from L.A. til we nearly go there it seemed. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was 2:30 a.m. It never got dark, just dusk. Some of the most beautiful land I've ever seen. Got to see some Moose on our trip out of Fairbanks. And our rivers, are really creeks compared to some up there. I want to go back badly when the salmon are running and be able to fish and watch the bald eagles.
I remember we went to a park also, called Alaskaland at the time. Was the first time I had ever eaten smoked halibut. Awesome food too. I think it's been renamed since to Pioneer Park. Would also love to go back and check out Mendenhall Glacier. Dad and mom got to take the chopper ride out onto it.
Oh, and the taxidermy mounts in both the Juneau and Fairbanks airports are awesome. It was the first time I got to see just exactly how friggin huge a real wolf and kodiak was.

When I first moved here we had Alaska, Mark Air and Delta (Twice a day)
I met some older ladies this summer who used to be FA's for Pacific Northern who used to fly to Juneau in Constellations. They were later bought out by Western.
All we have now is Alaska Air and ferry service. Most of the villages and smaller towns are served by ferry and bush service.

When you roll past some of those valleys recently vacated by ice, you wonder what's back there. It's killing me to find out. I've only touched what's up in those fjords. It's like a flooded Yosemite. The waterfalls are mind blowing.

Living is pretty easy here. I think most folks think it's harder, but its so much easier IMO. I'll never leave the area for good.

In Juneau? Pretty easy. Unemployment rate is around 4%. Think the highest it got in the past few years was around 6.
If any college age or transitional folk want a fun summer job, the tourist industry is hiring. It's what I did when I first moved here.

Really, really beautiful in that area. I want to come to Alaska real bad, but the wife will only vacation where it's warmer than home.

It can get pretty warm in summer, particularly the interior. Fairbanks and up to the Brooks Range is actually the warmest part of the state. Record high of 99 was recorded north of the Arctic Circle, believe it or not. On the coast, the temp is moderate. Rarely gets hot, rarely gets too cold.
