Walmart Sales Indication of Coming Problems?

quote:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. had the worst sales start to a month in seven years as payroll-tax increases hit shoppers already battling a slow economy, according to internal e-mails obtained by Bloomberg News.

“In case you haven’t seen a sales report these days, February MTD sales are a total disaster,” Jerry Murray, Wal- Mart’s vice president of finance and logistics, said in a Feb. 12 e-mail to other executives, referring to month-to-date sales. “The worst start to a month I have seen in my ~7 years with the company.”

Someone will be along shortly to post that Lowe's is hiring 10k more people than last year. Higher taxes, Obamacare and an administration that is pro regulation... We will be lucky if all we see is stagnant growth for the next 4 years...

Addressed in the article... And unless Tax Season has changed, that wouldn't affect this year and not the previous 7.

Why would Amazon all of a sudden be a difference maker this month and not the previous months? Sure, there is a trend to online retailers, but it wouldn't constitute a spike for this month.

Lots of Walmart shoppers are lower wage earners. What happened in January that reduced the hours for many of these workers...

I don't think its about the effects of Obamacare, its the SS increase..

Those individuals got used to blowing that extra 30-40 a month and now they are realizing it's no longer there.

But again, do these numbers foreshadow a downturn in the economy?

ETA:
And if I remember right, consumer confidence is now back at like a 9 month low.

They'll get by with
a little help
from their frieeeeeeennnnnnnnnds.
Push for online sales taxes pick up steam in Congress

quote:

U.S. states could collect millions of dollars in online sales taxes, with members of both parties in Congress sponsoring legislation Thursday that would resolve states' decades-long struggle to tax businesses beyond their borders.

"Small businesses and states alike are suffering from the inability to collect due -- not new -- taxes from purchases made online," said Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., adding the legislation is a "bipartisan, bicameral, common-sense solution that promotes states' rights and levels the playing field for our Main Street businesses."

Walmart can compete with sites like Amazon better than most stores. You can still buy almost anything from their website and get free shipping to any store. Clutch for huge items.

There is a definite economic downturn coming. You have payroll taxes going back up, so people who spend all of their money now have less to spend.

It is either a clear indication that sales across the board are dropping due to more income being eaten up by increased taxes and health insurance premiums, or, as it will be spun, it means that shoppers are starting to shop at different venues than just Wal-Mart. They must be branching out to local mom and pop stores and places like Trader Joe's. Everyone has so much more money now that they no longer have to shop at Wal-Mart, right?

Businesses are suffering from a lack of taxes being collected. Who knew?

Can anyone guess who said this?

Both are just as invalid for an overall picture.

Housing starts are up to pre 2009 levels, economy's looking up.

Mortgage default rates are up, economy's headed for a double-dip.

Foreclosures are down, real estate market will lead the bull market.

GDP down in q4 for 2012, recession fears increase.

Lowe's to hire 10,000, economy up for recovery.

Walmart can't get people to buy shit, economy's in the tank.

It is funny to watch the Republican/Conservatives/Libertarians hoping for economic disaster to validate their beliefs - just like the Democrat/Liberals/Progressives were doing during the Bush administration.
