Agreed. Help the kids more, sterilize those who keep making mistakes.

Pre-school is babysitting. No other way around it.

With pay increases and perhaps a college loan repayment program more of our brightest will become teachers.

You are fooling yourself.

Problems we have in education aren't the teachers. You can pay them 40k or 80k, doubt you will see much of a difference in education. Loan repayment programs will just attract moochers.

It isn't. Average student does just fine and is job ready.

Our rates here for those graduates is laughable compared to other countries.

That tends to happen when you get a 40-50% dropout rate in some of your inner cities. That skews the stats.

From my experience in public school the average and above students most likely would have been successful in some form with or without public school.

We had special ed, average and AP in a single classroom. Spent too much time on the low achievers, the upper level kids were basically self educating, with minimal guidance.

Our education system isn't nearly as bad as some people think. A boatload of money or new teachers isn't going to transform our statistics.

Parenting problem. Not an education system problem.

What is the problem? That we aren't number one in every category anymore? The average kid has an opportunity for an education to follow the profession of his choosing and will be well equipped.

As for the rest, you can't force people who have an aversion to education to do better in school. many developed nations don't have this problem.

Here is something to chew on.
quote:

The federal government has made hefty financial commitments to education in recent years, including the implementation of No Child Left Behind and the subsequent waivers from the standards-based law as well as the influx of about $89 billion in stimulus dollars to prevent teacher layoffs, keep class sizes down and avoid program cuts.

Still, the Harvard study found little correlation between increased per-pupil spending and gains in test scores. A similar analysis by 24/7 Wall St. last July yielded similar results. In 2009, the U.S. spent more than $10,000 per student, ranging from $6,356 in Utah to $18,126 in New York. Utah's high school graduation rate, however, was higher than New York's.

We are middle of the pack, but it isn't for a lack of trying.

So you think the tax payers should fund pre-school?

Research also shows that after school private math tutors help students improve at math. Should that be an entitlement now?

WTF is the liberal endgame? Make EVERYTHING an entitlement?

I didn't say that. Was just refuting the asinine assertion that he was making.

I think in the long run pre-school helps children and I personally would rather fund that then fund ag subsidies or some social welfare programs.

And no, the liberal endgame isn't that, but I'm sure you will believe what you want.
