the past 3 years I did my taxes on Turbotax. I decided to try taxact this year. I was very pleased with it. Seemed a lot more detailed and informative than turbotax. I was also able to import my previous years tax return for no cost (something that turbotax makes you "upgrade" to do)
previous years i did a 1040ez. this was my first year itemizing with a 1040. I was pretty confident using taxact.
also, previous years i would pay the extra 14.95 and let turbotax file my state. used the LDR this year and was glad i did.
between taxact and LDR I paid $0 to file.
just thought I'd give my opinion. which tax prepare to you use?

I think most of the software is created pretty equally. I do taxes and tell most people that unless they have a situation like the above poster that they will more than likely do the exact same job as a preparer by using a computer program as long as they read carefully and follow directions.
I would second what the OP did, if you have a simple return you can usually file for free online with your state's department of revenue website.
