I've been looking for a mule deer hunt for next year. I would prefer somewhere I can drive to that's around 20 hours or so which rules out Montana. Been looking in eastern Colorado. Anybody have any suggestions ?

Booked a hunt with silver spur outfitters in western colorado. Anybody know of these people ?

Eastern Colorado (east of I25) will require preference points to draw. Most good units in Colorado are going to require numerous preference points to draw. Some areas are easy. I drew a tag and hunted around the Pagosa Springs area years ago with no Preference points. Lots of hunters but some nice deer taken.

New Mexico is a good option, but again, you have to draw the tag.

May want to look into West Texas. Tags are over the counter, drive is shorter, weather is better. I hunted the Davis Mountains in west texas for mule deer and had a great hunt. Deer are smaller in body size and rarely get as wide as a Rocky Mountain Mule Deer. But they do grow some great racks. Almost exclusivley private land so you will have to go with an outfitter or pay a trespass fee.

Here are a couple good ones from Texas

I've been talking to Kiowa outfitters. They act like tags will be easy to draw for archery and if I can't get one they have landowner tags.

New Mexico and West Texas. A couple years back my FIL shot one just a little bigger than the posted pics. The Muley he shot barely fit in the bed of his 2500 and took four guys to load. He didnt score it because it had a few broken tines but it was easily over 210. I think you only get one tag for a mule deer in Texas but its been a while since Ive hunted there because Ive been here at LSU. Open Range its a hard hunt because Mule Deer travel more than white tail and there arent as many of them. Also some counties offer a Black Tail season which is a cross between a mule deer and a white tail.

Wyoming. My uncle did a elk/mulie hunt up there. Great success.

My family use to lease a place in matador tx, outside of Lubbock, mainly for the quail. We killed a few good mule deer of the ranch but never anything 150+. Maybe thy are bigger farther west ?

I didn't know you were interested in archery hunting. Yes, tags are much easier to draw. That is a very difficult animal to hunt with a bow, but would be an awesome hunt. (Especially if you can fil that tag!) Good Luck

He made the kill on the Texas/NM border a short drive from his house. Lubbock is about an hour and a half drive from there. Mule Deer are like ghosts if you want sucess choose your outfitter wisely even if you still might come up short. If you want better odds you gotta go further north.

Hate than you ruled out Montana so quickly

hypnos - Are you familiar with the Muleshoe, TX area? never hunted it but my grandparents lived there when I was growing up. Some great memories from my childhood visits.

I really would like to broaden my options but I just don't want to drive all the way to Montana

4 of us booked rifle mule deer hunt with silver spur outfitters near rifle colorado. I know one guy that has hunted with them and had great luck. Guy had a spot come open the first week of November and we jumped on it. We usually whitetail hunt in Kansas that time of e year but wanted to change it up. I finished grad school last December and have been looking to do something as sort of a present to myself for that. Also I'm getting married next month so I went ahead and booked something cool.

Anybody ever heard of these folks ?
