Will close on Friday if need be and will start Sunday.
Not down with this, I loved Cotton as the middle reliever. He bridged the gap from fastball starter to fastball closer perfectly with his junkball pitching.

Probably will settle into closer role once someone emerges

love to see him do well this season.

I think he'll move back to midd reliever once Rumbelow comes back. He's most dangerous as that.
This isn't a bad move for now, Mainieri wants to win every game and this gives us the best chance to win every game...although I have not a clue how long he can last as a starter on sunday especially if throws an inning on friday night. I always saw Cotton as a guy that's a 2-3 inning/night guy. Not a 5-6 inning at once guy. I feel like his stuff would be much easier to hit the 2nd time around in a lineup.

Don't know about that, Rumbelow will be back in 3 weeks and he had the upper hand before the injury.

Yep. Like I said, what made him damn near unhittable last year was that he was coming out of the pen topping out at 84mph after opposing hitters were seeing guys like Gausman and Eades throwing mid-90's for 5 innings.
The timing is all messed up and Cotton makes hitters look silly with his movement. After those hitters figure out the timing, he becomes very hittable.

When I first saw him I wasn't sure he would ever be a starter, but as the season went on he grew on me. As long as he maintains control over placement he's capable of starting. Not sure I want the Sunday starter closing on Friday though.

I remember his first game ever 3 years ago, when he came in to pitch in relief and nobody knew who he was because he wasn't in the program. Proceeded to pitch 3 scoreless innings.

I doubt Rumbelow is back in 3 weeks but that would be cool.

I don't understand why he insists on shoe-horning someone into that hybrid role. Find 3 weekend starters and a closer. If you can't do that, find a new recruiting coordinator because if you have to have a hybrid pitcher every fricking year, someone isn't doing their job.

I hate this, I knew Cotto was going to win the Sunday spot, but I hate this hybrid role crap.

Que?
Goody was our closer last year and wasn't anything else.
As far as past years go, no one saw Ott going full retard in 2010 & 11. Even in 2011 though, we had a set rotation with Gausman/McCune/Alsup.
2010 was the only year when you had literally nobody that could solidify a weekend role behind a hurt Ranaudo (Not Matulis, Bourgeois, Ott, Alsup, Ross, Rittiner, Bradshaw, or Reed)

Not saying he won't, this just leaves a huge hole in middle relief.

I agree with this; Cotton is best when in middle relief role one time through the order.
