Not that I'm aware of. This is very strange. If one were a believer in the prophecies of St. Malachy ( LINK), then we're about the see the entrance of the mysterious "Peter the Roman."

Papal Resignation The last to have done it appears to be Pope Gregory XII, but that was a special case where there were rival claims to the papacy that were going to be decided at Constance from 1414-1418. Before that, I think the last example was Pope Celestine V in 1294. Other News Outlets Wall Street Jounrnal --> LINK London Telegraph --> LINK New York Times --> LINK. USA Today --> LINK.

I think even my lowly, annoying arse deserves a sticky for this one. They said it hasn't happened in 600 years. I'm not Catholic, so I don't know. Why would he do this?

I'm guessing he's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or some similar illness.

This was from the London Telegraph...
quote:
... Last year the Pope started using a cane on occasions and recently he appeared to have trouble reading the text of an address he delivered in Rome. ... While it was "beautiful to be old", age brought challenges and difficulties with which he himself was familiar. ...

I don't think Catholics are too focused on the BamaScoops of the world at the moment, but for the record, I seriously doubt that this has anything to do with sexual abuse of children. I mean, you never know and all that, but all reports seem to indicate that Cardinal Ratzinger was in the camp of the bishops wanting stricter treatment of accused priests (as well as "rehabilitated" priests) under canon law.

For some odd reason, I am pumped up about this. Seven years ago I was amazed by the process that Benedict was selected. It just totally engrossed me. A resignation hasn't happened in 600 years, this is going to be cool to watch unfold. I am going to be glued to media outlets this time too

It would be nice to get a firmly pro-death penalty pope who supports the Global War on Terrorism and free market economics more than Benedict XVI, even though I love Benedict and think he is the greatest pope of my lifetime so far.

Some world shaking event coming that he knows he's not physically up to dealing with. Official announcement of alien contact?

From the NYT ( LINK):
quote:
Regarded as a doctrinal conservative, the pope, 85, said that after examining his conscience “before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are longer suited to an adequate exercise” of his position as head of the world’s Roman Catholics.
A fuller statement via USA Today ( LINK):
quote:
"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," he told the cardinals. "I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of St. Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary — strengths which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately the ministry entrusted to me."

Why do you think Benedict is the greatest pope of your lifetime? I would not get your hopes up too much about a pro death penalty pope. Although my own personal opinion my be clouding my judgement.

He was the first pope capable of really attacking atheism, agnosticism, Islam, etc., in a rigorously academic and intellectual way, which is definitely a necessary thing given the current Internet age in which we live.

(Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Monday he will resign on Feb 28 because he no longer has the strength to fulfill the duties of his office, becoming the first pontiff since the Middle Ages to take such a step. The 85-year-old pope said he had noticed that his strength had deteriorated over recent months "to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me". "For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter," he said according to a statement from the Vatican.

Note that it seems necessary to do this sooner rather than later, or else the requisite elements of serious thought and full freedom will no longer be possible, and thus resignation itself would no longer be possible.

Come on, Scoop. I'm not Catholic but this is something that kids will read about in history books years from now. Why would you want to torment Catholics by saying those things? Because it's true.
Another Bama fan heard from. You know what? We will never have as many college football championships as you. You'll always be the top dog in that category. Congratulations. But aside from that, you have nothing, and even with all of your success, you're still so miserable that even when someone else wins one (like Auburn), your "rich culture" produces real winners who have no problem destroying the cherished landmarks of a proud university just because they beat you at a sport that in the end, doesn't really amount to anything but what the rest of the world considers to be friendly competition. Does anything make you people happy? Are you so miserable that, despite a century of success, you still feel the need to shite all over everything that other people value? You know what? Win another one this year. Win 10 more. Win 100 more. None of it will give you what we have. When people travel to the US, they don't schedule their vacation based on which village of angry rednecks has won the most college football championships. Like other actual human beings, they want to see things that are enriching and culturally satisfying - and you have none of that. No one in the world gives a frick about you - but you, but they'll always flock to New Orleans and other parts of our state. Yours is reserved for ridicule. When they think of American redneck trash, they think of you. When they talk about places to avoid while visiting the Unites States of America, they always highlight you. Always. Please impress me with your heroic ability to post the "umad?" memes that others (mostly our people) have made as a response to this. I welcome them. None of it will erase the fact that you are completely worthless. You have nothing to offer the world, and no one would miss you if you disappeared. And no one is more acutely aware of that immutable fact than you are. You are human trash, and the only reason I hope you find some peace in this life is so you won't continue to offend the world with your miserable existence. Have a nice day.
