For bass fishermen, the LDWF's Inland Fisheries Section moved to change the 20-year-old regulations on black bass in the Atchafalaya Basin, the Lake Verret-Belle River area and Lake Fausse Pointe to allow for a creel limit of seven bass per day per angler with no size limits. A 14-inch minimum size and a 10-bass-per-day creel limit have been posted in these three areas since Hurricane Andrew devastated fish stocks in 1992. Both the deer and bass-fishing issues have a 120-day comment period. The new deer hunting areas, if approved, will take effect for the 2013-2014 hunting seasons, while the new Atchafalaya-area bass regulations will not become a regulation until sometime in late June.

Ya me too it was stupid to keep having this rule. Even after all the studies and everything. Its about time. It should have been gone a long time ago.

As I said in the other thread. I liked fishing all day catching 40 fish just to get 6 or 7 keepers out of it. Was kinda exciting pulling up to the landing and seeing a green jeans and hoping 14 inches on his scale matched mine

i personally don't like it, i happen to like the 14" size limit...there are big fish in the spillway...they ARE THERE. i think they would have done better moving it to 5 over 14" and 5 under...

Either way, the laws only work if enforced, and I have never been checked fishing the spillway or verret (been fishing it my entire life). you know coonasses keep smaller fish anyway, it happens. i really wish they would have gone to a 12" limit first instead of removing it, that way we could really see if it's the fishing pressure hurting it or if it really follows their "study". If you're catching nothing but 11.5" fish in a couple of years you would have your answer and could reevaluate.

Does that mean you can catch 3 more with a size limit?

Btw, about a month ago someone posted many charts on the life span of bass in the spillway released from LDWF that pretty much showed the fish got to 14" and died, not many got bigger. And the fish that were 14" were old fish. Ill try to find a link to it.

yes... i read it, i don't agree with them...whoever did the study doesn't know the spillway very well imo. There's a 120 day comment period, i plan to write a well thought out "report" including my experiences.

I got questions...how do they plan to enforce the laws? and how are they going to protect the spawn? if all the fish died at 14", why do 20 - 22 lb stringers consistently win big tournaments every year? it takes 14-17 lbs to win big tournaments in other parts of the year not including the spawn. They can't sit here and tell me that they all die when i see otherwise all the time.

the real problem in the spillway is silt, areas that used to hold fish just don't anymore

I do agree there are big fish there. But releasing 100 2lb 13 in fish every summer trip is rediculous.
My personal preference would be 5 under 14 and 5 over 14 per person

It makes for some great rainy day reading

I don't really have an argument one way or the other because I don't know. I'm a little worried about it because it may draw more people there and with GPS, it's hard to make yourself a little secret spot way away from the landing.

I've always had fun every time I went because even on holiday weekends I could get away from everybody pretty easily. I just hope this doesn't change that.

I am also scared it will cause overfishing.
For every water level i have a different spot, and i already cant stand when someone is in them

Those of you wanting to make your voice heard on the matter, literally, might consider attending the monthly LDWF commission meetings at the BR headquarters. They allow time for public comment in these type matters during the meetings

I personally don't want mine heard because I have no clue what's the right thing to do.

I highly doubt anybody else does either though. I just hope it doesn't make it more popular. I love fishing the spillway.

Well I've never heard anybody say they aren't fishing the spillway any more. All I hear is people say they want to fish it more / learn it, etc. So the popularity of there is only growing and I'm sure this will have an effect on it.

Luckily for me I only fish it on weekdays and try to avoid holidays so I don't have to fight the crowds.

bingo...u think there is pressure now? wait till the water falls out in June and watch how many boats show up with 5 ppl in each one...in a way i might be ok with it bc these ppl will catch the smaller more aggressive fish and be on their way, hopefully. i just think there should be some kind of size limit instead of doing away with it totally, reduce it and reevaluate.
