Microsoft and PC Gaming

Interesting read
I think the master race will agree with this but I hope Microsoft doesn't get too far away from pc gaming. I would love to see it become a focus after this next console version.

they should of turned xbox 720, into a console PC. with options to upgrade, like a pc.

If it took another year of development, then so be it

I remember 3-4 years ago when people said PC gaming was dying.

Now it's the complete opposite. There's hardly any excitement for the new consoles. People are more informed when it comes to hardware and they can already see that the consoles coming out are outdated.

That was before the gaming industry started showing little to no creativity, and Mods starting gaining traction again.

You also have a lot of people like me. Why the heck would I pay so much money for a console when a PC helps me out professionally and to have fun.

That was just a silly knee-jerk reaction to the current round of consoles arriving.

Consoles really are in serious trouble because the console manufacturers are selling an inferior product for no profit. The only room for a profit generating console is at the high end, and at the high end there isn't the demand to capture enough of the market to justify making games for it.

That's why consoles after the upcoming generation will just be a fancy case on a standardized PC running a normal o/s.

No more idiotic exclusives.

Idiotic exclusives are the only reason I even buy consoles in the first place. If every game was on PC I'd never sniff a console.

Steamboxes will be the death of consoles.

Until PC software sales can come close to console numbers, I don't think Microsoft will be changing anything. MS has positioned themselves to be the all-in-one media player with the next generation.

A PC already is an all in one media player if you want it to be. Got an old desktop sitting in the corner with a spare IDE slot?

There's no reason PC games shouldn't sell as well as console games if someone really wants to promote the platform - the advantages of doing so are obvious, no need to pay a per game royalty fee to Sony/MS/Nintendo, and you can sell directly to the buyer, over the internet, as opposed to on plastic and metal through a network of wholesalers and retailers who each take their cut.

The problem is, IMO, that PCs are rarely specialist gaming machines. No one buys a PS3 just to play one or two games in 5 years. Once you spent $300 on the hardware, you need to justify it with several games. I'd guess a lot of people own half life 2 or one of the other triple A PC titles, who have minesweeper as their second most played PC game.

Big market out there for the right people.

re: Microsoft and PC Gaming

The PC and the living room have an odd relationship for the vast majority of people and sales have dictated that they want multimedia capabilities in their living room even if they already have a PC capable of it in their office.

Before digital distribution became a viable PC sales method you could argue that consoles and PC were on a level playing field for sales but even with the advent of a pc-centric delivery platform they still underperform. I agree that there is a huge market out there but the problem is that they are all fricking pirates about it.
