That is the FBI Moneypak virus, and its an absolute bitch to get rid of.

Running a virus scan usually won't do it.

If you're willing to pay, Kaspersky and Eset have been consistently regarded as two of the best year after year. I've heard BitDefender is good, too.

AVG and Avast make decent free products.

The safe mode removal process works really well. I've done it. I'll never pay my computer guy ever again.

malware bytes is a pretty good removal tool as well.

agree, malwarebytes is very good. but the free version doesn't proactively protect you; it just helps you scan & remove the virus after you're infected. And I've seen it miss a couple things. If someone goes the free route, like Malwarebytes, it is a good idea to download a second tool... AVG, Avast, etc. Eset actually has a good, free scanner/removal tool that I've seen detect and remove a couple things Malwarebytes missed.

apparently it's going around. It's on the homepage of bleepingcomputer.com-- a good site for instructions on removing many particularly difficult types of malwarebyte. Please note the removal guide for the FBI ransomware as the top news item...

re: FBI locked up my computer at work

The IT crew at the university I work for (including the guys in computer/software engineering) uses Malwarebytes for first-pass cleanup of infected computers. It's pretty rare that they have to use a stronger malware cleaner.

Some moron fell for the McAfee security pack, though, and they force on all our work products (except for engineering, where they overrode the command). In 2010, about three months after they forced McAfee on us, we were the victims of some kind of rootkit that tried to steal credit card info off our servers (luckily, we farm cc processing out to a third party), along with other personal info. Once it transferred the data, it killed the servers - physically destroyed the blades - as well as the hard drives of a about half our computers, including mine.

It must have been a pretty widespread infection, too, because it took a month for them to get the replacement hard drive for my computer.
