Exactly that was good too. No it's not gonna be as good as it was, but it'll still be better than 90% of the sitcoms out there

As far as "Community" standards go, it was not a great episode.

But that's high standards, plus about nine months of anticipation.

Not even remotely true IMO. Dean Pelton is awesome is very (VERY) small doses. Ever since he's become part of the main cast, he's gone downhill. Definitely a little too much dean last night.

Overall, I thought it was just an okay episode. Community seems to be hit or miss a lot of times (with the hits being grand slam HRs). This episode was a miss overall. However, a miss of Community is still something I enjoy more than most other shows out there.

I feel like I'm gonna HATE the Chang storyline that unfolds over the next few weeks though. He fricking sucks so much.

That episode was super disappointing. Community is the kind of show where it's either a home run, or falls flat, and this one fell flat pretty hard.

In comparison, because I know a lot of snarky Community fans like to complain about it, I will probably give Round 1 to The Big Bang Theory.

Chevy will be on all 13 episodes. They weren't filmed in order so he was able to finish his part before he left.

I like him in small doses (similar to the dean), but he was much better as a teacher on this show.

And part of it is because I fricking hate Ken Jeong. Aside from maybe Role Models and his small part in Knocked Up, I pretty much hate him in everything he's done and don't think he's funny at all.

Not really..at least I couldn't. This episode was just a kinda weird one for me. Something was off, but the tone and everything felt the same.

Also, something looked different about Donald Glover. May be putting on some weight now that he's got music royalties rolling in.

I thought the episode was a complete dud. The whole time it felt like they were trying too hard to be "Community". The only person who had a decent performance was Joel Mchale. Chevy Looked like he is just phoning it in at this point, and there was WAY too much Dean.

Overall a complete "F" from me.

agreed, frick hawthorne, his character has gotten worst and worst, it's so irritating for him to even be on the screen at this point

Yes. You can tell. There's cool ideas, but he always had cool ideas in service of story and character. Here, it exists just to be goofy. And there is a little too much hand holding of Jeff telling the audience his motivations, things he never would've done. Jeff warns us that the Dean isn't wearing a costume, Harmon would've expected us to catch that. It's a subtle difference, but it affects the tone of the show.

I did like they have continued to mock Jeff's "big speech", so they did subvert their own structure, which I like. The show is all about subversion.

"I'll bring over Friends With Benefits. No subtext."

I love the Dean.

If this was the Dean's only scene of the show it would have been perfect. Instead they shoved him in and made him the focus of the show. It didn't work because when someone is trying to be overly funny they are normally just the opposite.

I love how people try to explain why a show wasn't good in a wierd way because they can't figure out why they weren't laughing.

Community was being too "Community".

...and I'm not attacking you because I'm guilty of the same thing.

I heard from some entertainment news outlets that he's been phoning it in for 3 years now.

I know what you are saying but that isn't what I meant. When I said

It felt like the guys went back, watched old episodes picked up on a few things that were funny and shoved it in to this episode.

Case in point. Dean Felton, its like they went back to the old episodes and saw that funny costumes, flirting with Jeff and making him add "Dean" to words worked well in small doses so they took that concept and multiplied it by 1000.

This is a perfect example of them trying to be "Community"

I'm still deciding how I feel about the episode. I need to watch it again to see if my current thoughts are accurate.

Abed basically served as the audience for this episode. The prevailing talk has been that this is probably the last year of Community, there has been a lot of change, and everyone is worried how they're going to deal with it.

So Abed's fantasy sequence was basically things lifted from past episodes and fan comments, and further stylized for emphasis. Replacing Chevy Chase, the title sequence basically ripping off the claymation episode, all the "Dean-isms". That was because that's what we remember fondly and what Abed wants so much not to change.

I do think they were trying too hard to be Community, but only in Abed's fantasy sequences.

Other thoughts: Over use of Dean Pelton. As someone said, if the last scene with him was his only scene, it would have been perfect. That also should have been the tag. I didn't like the 'Antics' thing.

I wish they would have just not shown Chang at all. Didn't need him this episode.

None of the season premieres have been especially strong, this one is no different. I do trust the new showrunners though, because they kept a lot of the same writers and directors, and also because I may be the only person on the planet that liked Aliens in America.

After I rewatch, I'll have more thoughts on this.
