We can effectively fix social security by efficient means testing. Mr. Smith, a wealthy retired businessman worth millions, has no business receiving social security funds.
What I just posted made up the bulk of the comments on a NY times payroll tax article.

Then don't make him pay it in.
The gov't tells him that is his money, forces him to pay it in over his lifetime, he becomes successful, they steal his money.
If we aren't going to get it back, then call it some tax rather than social security.

Then you would have to admit that the government lied about social security to get it passed in the first place.
And if you acknowledge that, then you should have to acknowledge that the governments will lie about other laws and programs to get them passed and that when people me like warn you that governments will abuse and manipulate things in the future (slippery slope) that you won't call us crazy kooks.

THAT IS NOT MORAL, and is the antithesis to what hard work should allow a person to gain.
How about instead of giving them money after retirement, the government stops penalizing them for gaining money off of assets. That sounds more fair.

But they payed into social security. Aren't they supposed to get their money back out? That trust fund is supposed to be swimming in cash. Just give them some of that.

If you means test Social Security then the justification for means testing Medicare follows naturally. If you means test for Medicare, then you can't justify universal health care with a single payer.
