How should High School talents like Leonard Fournette be handled?

Mean you have prospects entering their Senior year of high school with their careers and college scholarships on the line for absolutely nothing. Should a high school coach go out of their way to limit the kids touches and try to reduce the number of hits or are you okay with the coaches using these talents like horses for their own personal gains of winning. Understandably i know the high school kid will want the ball and try to win but i mean, one tear of the knee and the repercussions could be too severe.

Kind of goes back to a Friday Night Lights themed question. Its one thing when you have a kid still trying to prove his worth to the college level and quarterbacks don't take the number of physical hits and all like running backs and other positional players.

you wanna win put booby in!!!

I think they should be used as needed to win. not handing him the ball up 21 in the 4th

but the coaches job is to win not to get these kids to shine in college. kinda shitty but the truth

Well Nkemdiche was playing both sides of the ball and running it 20 times a game as a DE so we saw how Grayson treated him.

Usually the stud athletes are so much bigger/stronger/faster than everyone else that it really doesn't matter how much you use them.

When the high school coaches are a part of the university set-up, or the school is paid to develop college players, then you make decisions like that.

Most high school coaches are employed to represent their school, and to put as good of a team on the field they possibly can. The goal for them whether realistic or not, is to win their district, make the playoffs and compete for a state championship.

St. Aug. while being VERY good, and having quality athletes, will not win it all with a coach who is looking to protect Leonard Fournette. What will they get out of the deal?

They've already gotten enough from LF, they owe LF the decency to protect his own interest.

re: How should High School talents like Leonard Fournette be handled?

one day we're going to see a situation where a kid uses the "saving himself" reasoning and requests off of a team if he commits before his senior year... the colleges won't mind bc they know how good the kid is, whether he's selfish or smart by bailing on his HS

i mean for most kids, a state championship is all they'll ever play for, but in LA, it's lost its luster since the split passed. for the surefire college kids, they'll be playing for SEC and BCS (or whatever it's called now) championships. State pales in comparison when you have a major college career and a legit shot at the NFL

Its not as big a dillehma as it was in FNL because of modern medicine.

Knee injuries rarely end careers for players that young now a days.

I know modern medicine has come a ways but it doesn't take much for these kids to never be teh same and the splits in talents between them and the next guy is all too close. It will always be a risky proposition.

Not with a guy like Fournette

His talent is high enough that you would take a chance on him even i he blew his knee out

Rickey Jefferson blew his knee out a season ago and signed with LSU yesterday and hes not on Fournettes level

If I had a talent like Fournette he would eithe touch the ball or have it faked to him every play. You only get a player like that once as a coach. I do think Katy used Adam Taylor excessively, but they did win 5A State in Texas and he signed with Nebraska so can't fault them.

If you're the Friday Night Lights coach then that's the good way to handle it.

If you're the Varsity Blues coach that's the bad way.

The premise of this thread is absurd. I can understand the player and/or his parents holding him out, but the high school coach? Get fricking real.

Consider it a collective decision thread , of course it's not just up to a coach, parents control their own kids... Sometimes

Should they put him in a bubble and never let him leave the house? What if he is in a car wreck or falls in the shower? Those are just as likely as him tearing a knee.

For his entire Sr year? What kind of pussy would you have to be? For frick sake, he is probably more likely to be killed in a care wreck on the way to school than to have a career ending knee injury, especially now.

Did anyone notice we had a guy suffer a severe knee injury in Dec 2011 only to come just 7 yards shy of the single season rushing record in the NFL?

A) it was 9 yards not 7

2) calm down with Adrian Peterson comparisons. Guy is obviously exception to the rule.
