| Tax Returns (Posted on 2/3/13 at 10:11 am)
Can someone please explain to me how the IRS is not ready to accept certain returns due to not having the paperwork correct in their system? I know I asked this in another thread and I don't think I got a good response. The topic came up during the fiscal cliff and how the delay could affect tax returns for 2012.... Shouldn't the tax code for the 2012 yr have been in place prior to 2012? Legally, how can the government go back and make changes retroactive to the prior year And yes, I'm pissed that I have to way another few weeks to get my money back

Congress didn't pass the tax bill until January 2. No one was sure whether we'd be dealing with pre-2001 law or the current law. Technically, every thing reverted back to pre-2001 law on January 1. The new law had to be made retroactive. That's how. BTW, I receive my acceptance e-mail for my federal return yesterday.

They started accepting returns 30 Jan.2013. They were a little late because of the Congress decisions. There are no current delays unless you claimed a teacher credit. LINK

Not if you try to claim an education credit... Trying to write off some education for work

Which is my question, how the frick can Congress backdate tax legislation??? So technically, we could work all fricking year and the first day of the next year be told, "Oh, btw, you are going to be taxed 50% for the previous year"

1. because they have their heads up their ass 2. because the system puts all volume in 3 months. Terribly inefficient way to run things.

Inb4 the OT baller responses saying they are so rich they don't file now because they owe. AND that your refund is a no interest loan to the government and you should fix your exemptions where there is no refund. And that they are so wealthy their accountant does this and does not use an online turbo tax like Timothy Geithner. AND they are posting from their gulfstream lear jet on their laptop with their 7th mistress begging them for sex

I was waiting for the latter... I had three major things that threw off my return and are giving me a nice little refund.

I believe the Supreme Court has ruled that tax laws can be retroactive to the date they were proposed in Congress. People can alter their affairs based on the proposed changes to minimize their taxes was the logic.

You do realize that "they" are "giving" you nothing don't you? "They" are simply returning the principal of that interest free loan you sent to "them".

Same here 81. Mine was already accepted and then I got the notice about the education credit delay. Mine is going straight to savings so not that big a deal. But my sister just got laid off and she was looking forward to hers do she doesn't have to really invade her savings while she's looking for a new job.

Because your fellow Americans give the federal government legitimacy.
