Messi went into the game hoping to equal Alfredo Di Stefano's record of 18 goals in the Clásico but had a frustrating night, despite providing the assist for the opening goal of the match by intercepting a weak ball by José Callejón into the path of Cesc Fábregas, who shot past Diego López and into the net.
