| Rodney Harrison says he’s ‘scared to death’ (Posted on 1/31/13 at 10:49 am)
after a career filled with concussions
quote:
After suffering an estimated 20 concussions over his 15-year pro career, Rodney Harrison now says he's "scared to death" about the future of his health in upcoming years. In an emotional interview on the upcoming Costas Tonight Super Bowl special, the former all-pro safety for the San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots says he now experiences symptoms of loneliness, isolation and anxiety. Harrison believes the NFL did not do enough to educate players about brain trauma during his career and says that he never even heard the word "concussion" mentioned by teams for his first five or six seasons in the league. Harrison was known for a hard-hitting style that earned him over $200,000 in fines over his career and often earned him the label of a "dirty" player. But with his career now over, the 40-year-old father of four is speaking out with more attention being paid attention to the brain trauma issue after the recent suicides of former players Dave Duerson and Junior Seau. "A lot of these players are really really suffering, Bob," Harrison said to Costas. "And this stuff is for real because I'm experiencing it now. I'm scared to death. I have four kids, I have a beautiful wife and I'm scared to death what might happen to me 10 or 15 years from now."
LINK 20 concussions !!!! It goes to show you just how much these NFL players go through to entertain us. What's the point of making a shite load of money when your brain dead by age 50. This dude will have it rough in the next decade or so of his life.

Not my problem. He should have used proper technique.

Not sure where he is going with this. Guys who continued to play thinking that nothing bad healthwise would happen in the long run are either lying or stupid. These guys knew the risks if they have any sort of common sense.

You can still use proper technique and end up with a lot of concussions. QBs especially get them all the time.

they didn't know the risk in 1950, they knew them during his career though. If he didn't know it is because he didn't care to learn or thought it wouldn't happen to him. Me personally i think he is just laying the ground work to join the lawsuit.

Yeah, they primarily do it for the money and glory, but YOU also view that as a form of entertainment for yourself.

gee, I had no idea that the helmet to helmet hits I initiated would be bad for me. Even when I walked away woozy, there were just no signs of it damaging my body.... Gotta love all these players who come out of the wood works as soon as the fame and fortune of NFL life are over. When it's time to pay the sacrifices of a long career, they cry foul like they thought football was safe. So tired.

Yet all the current players who know the risks don't seem to be quitting.

Well, this is part of the problem. You've got a lot of under educated kids from poor families that are great athletes. If your choice is to live in squalor with your mom, or go to the NFL and make millions, you are going to go to the NFL regardless of the risks or even if you understand the risks. You understand this is your way to get out of whatever hood you came from.

not so much when they are in the pocket though. These days if a DE/OLB sneezes on them, they get a flag. But then you do have a cases like Alex Smith who was hit when he tried to make a play running the ball. Same thing that happened with Aaron Rodgers a few years ago in Detroit.

Didn't realize he played QB. He knew the consequences. He would often go for a kill shot head first. Again, not my problem.

did/do nfl contracts not have a waiver in them? I don't understand how former players can go after the NFL for this brain trauma thing when they can't do it for arthritis or something like that.
