Pelican or Pontchartrain in Mandeville are probably closest. I'm on the other end of the state or I'd take you out on mine. If she survived that storm last night that is.

I hope she did. My dad was an avid sailor and passed away 3 years ago. It's something I'd like to be able to teach to my kids if I have them one day.

Been sailing all my life, like previously said the best way to learn is to go to the nearest yacht club and offer to crew (most people would let you on in no time) in a weekly fun race (Wednesday nights at syc and noyc for example) and you will pick stuff up fairly quickly. You will appreciate the bvi much more if you know what your doing when you get down there instead of taking a week long course. Best bet in the bvi is to get a charter for a week with a captain for the first day or two to educate you on moorings

Yeah I'm going out for my regular Wednesday boat time in a few hours so I'll find out how she took it. Me and my buddies have boats and go out there every Wednesday and Friday to either sail or hang out for dock time depending on the weather. Too damn cold today but man this wind would be fun if it wasn't.
Oh well, we'll hang out in the cabin and get drunk as frick and come home stinking of cigarettes and booze once again. It's tough being a sailor.

I know I guy in college (five years ago) that did that trip/class. He said it was awesome and thought highly of the experience

Also, if you're serious, these are the guys to go to:
Power Squadron
There are some prerequisites, but here is the sailing class:
Sail
Sail – is a complete sail course created to serve the needs of the novice and experienced sailor, as well as the non-sailor, for basic skills and knowledge. The course starts with basic sailboat designs and nomenclature, rigging, safety, and sail processes and then tackles the physical aspects of sailing forces and techniques sail applications, marlinespike, helmsmanship and handling of more difficult sailing conditions, navigation rules, and an introduction to heavy weather sailing. An On-The-Water component enhances the learning experience. Appendices provide an introduction to sailboat racing and sailing in Canadian waters
LINK
If you have any motor vessel experience at all, even just poking around in a 12' skiff with a 10 hp johnson on it, you won't have any problems.

Have a Chaparral SSi 190 that I've owned for a year and a half. Also had an '88 Mako 234 this summer for fishing. Plenty of boating experience, just no sailing. I'll look into Power Squadron and getting onto a crew. Thanks everybody for the input.
