Not an extremely seasoned NBA watcher - subs question

Our substitution patterns feel like a hockey team. Very patterned, and clear-the-bench in style.
It seems that other teams sprinkle in starters with subs and are not wholesale shifts. Also, seems that Monty stubbornly sticks to the rotation concept, regardless what's happening on the floor.
Am I nuts?
