First off, I love this movie. Saw it in high school on a date, solid cast, great theme song, etc.

Now, ignoring the fact that NASA happened to have two super secret shuttles available, and just happened to have a Martian dune buggy that could happen to be able to be fitted with a space drill, and just happened to have a bad arse roughneck that had drilled every place in the planet, and that Mir happened to have enough LOX available to refuel the shuttles, what I have a hard time with is the time line.

They figure out at the beginning that they have 17 days and change til the asteroid hits. Harrys platform is in the South China Sea. With ridiculous logistics, we assume the air force could fly Harry and Grace to Houston in 24 hrs. In that span, his whole crew has left the rig and gone home. Let's assume it takes another 2 days to get them all to Houston. They said they have 12 days to train in the movie. We're now at 15 days movie time. Now you have to stop at Mir and refuel. That probably takes about 12 hrs. Now you have to achieve escape velocity. It took Apollo 3 days to get to the moon with the most powerful rocket ever made. Those shuttles are nowhere near a Saturn IV. Either way, we're now at 18 days with a ridiculous amount of time management.

Distance from Earth to moon is 238k miles. I believe they said the rock was traveling at 25k mph. That's a 9 hr trip. Then wasn't the "Zero Barrier" 3 hrs? So you're gonna land, set up, and drill 800 feet in 3 hrs? Come on.

I was always curious as to why there was a machine gun on that dune buggy. Did they expect to shoot at aliens on the asteroid?

A problem not isolated to this movie. You know what one of the few scifi movies that Actually keeps the physics of space relatively correct? Serenity.

And Affleck still managed to find time to get engaged and play with animal crackers on Liv Tyler's stomach.

Nucky Thompson found time to see a loan shark.

Hell, they all had a "cheat day" I think.

Serenity

I watched this again a cpl weeks ago. I've never seen the Firefly series, but I really enjoyed the movie.

Is Firefly a good series? I seem to recall it being a M/TV Board favorite. How many seasons are there? (I can Google that, just figured I would throw it in since I'm lazy).

I'm not gonna lie. I pretty much tear up every time that kid runs to see his dad after they land back on earth.

Yeah, its a really good popcorn flick and the part with Harry talking Liv on the big screen is sad too.

That, and unapologetically.

I can suspend disbelief and enjoy a movie, unlike a lot of people on this board. But every once in a while, it's difficult.

Still, as I said, I love the movie.

I can completely suspend belief. It's not the physics of what's happening or the feasibility or plausibility. This movie is a giant turd.

I don't think anyone is saying it is the GOAT or a classic, but it is better than half the shite you can find on TV, such as Honey Boo Boo or Kardashians or any other reality show you can find on TV, sans Duck Dynasty, jack.

Am I going to go out of my way to watch Armaggedon? No.

Will I watch it if I'm flipping channels and its either it or Law & Order ATV or CSI Milwaukee, yeah...probably.

One of the worst scenes I can think of.

I usually can do this too. That's what movies are all about.

...but Armageddon was so far gone from real physics that it irritated me so much that I couldn't enjoy it.

I'm sad to say that I ruined this movie for my gf at the time by explaining all of the physical impossibilities in the movie. I felt bad for doing that, but it was such a turd (as said before)

When that scene comes on, I DO want to close my eyes...and I DO want to miss a thing.
