| Will we ever hit a point where movie theaters (Posted on 1/28/13 at 11:29 am)
get bypassed by some form of electronic means to view a new film at home? Seems like a lot of people already dislike theaters due to the crowd, noise, costs, etc and with televisions in most homes only getting larger and nicer, will we hit a point where the theater is deemed unnecessary? I'm thinking of it in the same scenario of redbox/netflix/etc killing off rental stores.

I think there will always be a market for movies on the big screen.

Why would they do that? They have one of the best rackets going.

True. However, there has to be something that either keeps the riff raff out or brings back the sacredness of seeing a movie in a theatre. Right now, the way theaters have turned into the equivalent of how airlines treat passengers, I don't have much of a desire to be squeezed into an auditorium with hoodlums, hooligans, noisemakers and a-holes.

If anything, that part of the movie experience will only get worse over time. We're becoming a less polite society and there's little that can be done to combat that trend. However I believe movies, as a date night, will continue to provide a big enough draw that theaters will have a place in the market for years to come.

I never have these issues you all complain about som much on this board. I went to 12 movies last year and can't recall any that weren't pleasant. Maybe it is the movies I go to or the times.

They have already experimented with an electronic model, but I don't think they will implement this model anytime soon. They don't want a pile of people getting together and watching the movie at home. If they implemented the model, I imagine the cost of the New Release would be substantial.

The morons there keep me away more than the prices do. Just shut the hell up and let other people enjoy the movie...is it really that difficult?

These people complaining probably go to movies on weekend nights at 8 on one of the first weekends of a movie opening. There are numerous ways around that. Weeknights pretty much kill all of the annoying shite. Waiting a while to see a movie does as well. Going to afternoon showings works. These are all obvious but I feel like people still don't do it.

I hope not as I do enjoy going to a move from time to time. When we do go, it's usually around 5pm and there's never a crowd. You wont catch me at a 7pm or later showing.

I always skip opening weekend. Maybe even the second weekend. I haven't had a miserable experience in years. Although that one was a doozie. Full theater and the guy next to me SMELLED bad, REAL BAD!!!

niche theaters are going to take over imo theaters that serve meals, alcohol, etc there are some theaters that have STRICT no talking/texting policies and go as far as having employees sit in movies and remove people who say one word

Well. More and more people every day are learning how to torrent and use streaming sites. People that aren't as adept with computers are getting older and older. At some point, there will be a tipping point based on price. It's the biggest reason I don't want to go is money, not because of some a-hole in the front. It shouldn't cost 30+ dollars to go on a date for a hour and a half.

My cable provider already offers some movies on demand that are available the same day as theaters. Some movies even before theaters. Double the price of course.

To the OP. The issue isn't theaters, it is the city you live in. I have never had these problems where I live.
