Hey guys I've been considering for a while a handgun or two for my home. I really have no clue on what kind or brand and even then price range on some of these things.

I wouldn't mind maybe an assault rifle down the road. Hopefully I can fork out enough before something happens to them.

Anyway, I'm just looking for something that would help me sleep better, and protect the family if a zombie apocalypse occurred or the world ended up just going plum crazy.

TIA

IMO A good first handgun is a glock/mp/xd. Not too expensive, reliable, easy to shoot. Also, revolvers are also good to look at. Get a price point then we can help you a lot more.

They aren't true assault rifles. That was a word created by the leftists to make them sound scary so people would support a ban. They are simply semi automatic rifles.

What is the purpose of this gun? Car gun? Carry gun? Home defense gun? It's important to know what your purpose is for it.

Well if you're going for a home defense gun, my two recommendations for around $450 are the Ruger SR series or a Stoeger Cougar. Both can be had in 9mm, 40, or 45, and are great handguns. It would depend on how it feels in your hand.

How much pistol experience do you have?

Ruger sr series. Also it's not gonna hurt to take a handgun class just to become familiar and be safe.

My apologies I've just always called them that. Semi automatic from now on, I stand corrected. The gun would be for home defense.

+1 to all the above.

If you have minimal handgun experience, I strongly advise you get some instruction.

You should probably invest in a shotgun instead.

It's just all about proper information bro. When you hear the wrong thing over and over you start to believe it. No fault of your own.

Any normal full sized polymer handgun would be great for home defense. The most recommended polymer guns are:

Springfield XD
Ruger SR
S&W M&P
Glock

These 4 you cannot go wrong with. It all comes down to what fits your hand and how much you're willing to spend.

EDIT: I agree with RA though. A shotgun is best for home defense.

The best place to get unbiased opinions is probably [link=(www.BudsgunShop.com)]Bud's[/link]. They have testimonials from owners of each one and they aren't afraid to bash them if they suck.

EDIT: Bud's site has a ton of traffic right now, so if you don't immediately get through, just try again later.
