I guess was just thinking how much our culture has begun to degenerate and at such an astounding pace. Reality shows that encourage risque lifestyles and seeking out temporary pleasure and irresponsibility over fulfillment and personal accountability. A music culture that has become a bad joke--young girls and boys listen to trash that describes how to properly "frick that bitch and leave em" or "pop your pussy" or some guy describing how he shoots up a place at will, etc. And young kids try to emulate this trashy culture--and to despise it is being "hateful". People now would rather get the most "likes" they can out of some "look at me" post than meet a person in real life and make actual, physical friends and meaningful relationships.
Our culture has gone to shite. Family values? They have become a joke. Manners? You now get made fun of for having manners because it's "weak" or "weird". I'm sure many will taunt me for venting on this subject, but let me just remind you that I am NOT religious and am a young guy--23 years old. So no, I am not some angry old man or radical christian. I just notice the immaturity and irresponsibility and furthermore the increasing STUPIDITY of Americans.
And yeah, i'm fully aware it won't change, and probably will get a lot worse. Just sucks for my children, that's all

What do you think has caused this?
Lack of religion?
Diminishing sanctity of life due to abortion and/or violent imagery (movies, etc.)?
Liberalism in general?
This is not a trick question, I'm genuinely curious as to what a non-religious 23 year old would attribute such dysfunction.

The Idiotarian savages and moral barbarians who are moving culture Forward (!), one Kardashian at a time, like to think they are making AmeriKKKa safe from the "racist, sexist, homophobic" (judgemental) traditions, principles and ideals that have made us the singular worst Nation on Planet Earth.
The aforementioned Idiotarians believe the greatest offense is to hold anybody accountable for anything, unless it is to be held accountable for committing a perceived offense against their authority as Guardians of The Culture.

Good post.
Hard to pinpoint the problem but Facebook, twitter, and the Internet have greatly contributed to it. All of these things have great uses, but like everything else they have a downside as well.
This is coming from a not too religious 34 yr old.

My opinion is an overall lack of personal accountability, which is instilled in children through the public educational system. Couple that with the highest birth rates taking place in the lower socioeconomic factions of our society where the father is absent in many cases, you have a recipe for disaster.

I would say the borderline obsessive consumption of media from youth combined with a more "anything goes" approach in society. Yes, i would attribute a large amount to an increasingly liberal american society.
I guess i just value my internal moral system of belief, even though I don't believe in any religion.

The old "Diversity is our strength" has led the media to worship alternative values which becomes interesting and accepted by the mainstream. Anything mainstream or traditional is hated and devalued.

You're probably a INTP like myself.. It doesn't take religion to construct a value system. Sure, some of the values mimic religious teaching - but that is more or less attributed to natural law.
My main issue is the general hatefulness and lack of respect most people show each other. Honor isn't valued enough.

I really don't think I have ever interacted with a single person who qualifies for a reality show. Average Americans are actually pretty decent people.
Oh wait - I did meet the Bachelor who was an airline pilot & he was just a commuter plane pilot doing his job.

OP, do you consider yourself simply non-religious or out-and-out atheist?
It does seem that instead of the current younger generations being passively non-religious while harboring no resentment toward religion, they are actively atheist and seethe and rebel at religion.
Would you agree that many amongst your generation are actively atheist? Am I way off base with this?
I would also agree with CarrolltonTiger in the fact that American life today is just too easy.
We have tremendous wealth and haven't sacrificed during wartime since at least the Korean War era (it's arguable that we sacrificed during Vietnam or even Korea; there was a draft, but there was no stateside rationing).

To stand up for any traditional interpretation of American life is to open oneself to ridicule and insults. Take a relatively innocuous thing like "sagging".It should be self-evident that Cleotis needs to pull his pants up from around his ass. Yet if one says a word to Cleotis, one is called a racist, ridiculed and marginalized, and Cleotis is given a jelly bean for "keepin'it real n shit". Same thing with women having babies once a year, there is no social sanction whatsoever except towards the person who notices. Multiple this out a million times every day and you have contemporary American culture. We are a nation of moral cowards in that we have lost the capacity to "defend" our American culture because we really can't look around and see very much that is worth defending. Even the concept of 'defending" America is seen as de'classe by our self-appointed Cultural Overclass.

People said the same about the youth and their loud rock music in the 60's. I'd say most of those kids grew up to be decent people.

Never said they weren't decent. Doesn't mean that a lot of them aren't stupid in areas of personal accountability, responsibility, and respect both for themselves and others.

I'm 22 years old and agree with everything you just said. It makes me sick to see how this country is today.
I guess me wanting to wear a button down shirt, tucked in, saying yes sir and yes ma'am and wanting to work for a living, while enjoying shows such as Duck Dynasty instead of shite like honey booboo, and listening to country and classic rock instead of ghetto rap just makes me weird.
Oh well, I'll just continue to laugh at the idiots.

Non-religious. I don't seek out conflict like some i know, but i just respectfully am not interested in religion.

I don't know..a lot are this way but there are also a lot that try to balance--try to keep one foot in the church while having their fun at the same time. You know, the girls who have bible quotes posted on the wall in their dorm room and claim to go to church camp yet are out in the club shakin their butt to trashy music in the club 3 nights out of the week. But I wouldn't say a lot of the youth are actively athiest YET..but i guess it is getting there
