| Then and now......a perspective from a blue chip from yesteryear (Posted on 1/26/13 at 6:18 am)
After reading the statements from the Tahaan kid, it got me thinking. If you have a solid scholly offer, what else do you need to know you are a valued commodity? I was recruited in the 80's as one of the highest ranked recruits in the state and almost all us were appreciative of the attention given to us. For the most part, it really did end up about the school and not the player. Most of us became Tigers and were damn happy (and grateful) about it. Sure, there were a few primadonas, but the core talent was fairly humble. It all boils down to what is now is what was then: after the recruiting limelight, you are nothing but a Crab. You gotta crawl before you can walk. (A term used back then) I blame media technology I guess......

Charles, a lot has changed since then, and even earlier. When I was a boy in the 1960's it was considered disgraceful to attract attention to yourself instead of crediting the team. It was also frowned upon to taunt an opponent. Those days are gone. Even in the 80's, when you were playing, it had changed a lot. People were doing touchdown dances and trash talking. This worked its way to the HS level and even into pee-wee. This culture is damaging to the individual and, I believe, results in unhappiness. But still most of the kids playing are excellent young men. That hasn't changed, so here's to 'em.

It was certainly a more respectable time back then.

Was in school during that time and knew some players. Like you said most were down to earth and not at all caught in the hype. Played a many basketball at married student housing while we were all trying to surprise.

Called about 2 times a week, mail about 3-4 times a week, etc. tons of mail. Bama would send telegrams too......it was kinda cool then. Also, got family Holiday cards from head coaches.

Look at everything now in our society, we have become such a myopic and rude society. For example, on this website, Facebook, etc, people say the meanest things to complete strangers. If you make a spelling mistake, voice your opinion, or anything you have people that are just so angry they will say something mean to shame someone they don't even know. If you don't have anything nice to say and someone is not attacking you than dont say anything. If you feel the need to say something at least do it respectfully. Act like you would if you were face to face with someone unless you talk to people in person like you do from the safety of your phone or computer. I have made an effort to change because I did it that stuff too, but now I'm a daddy and am trying live and act in a way I want my son to be and am trying to set a positive example. I want to leave this world with a good child, human, and man.

What's your name if you don't mind me asking. You played for LSU in the 80s correct?

Sorry......because I regress into an Internet a-hole from time to time, I must remain in anonymity. My "career" was nothing of note. I was placed on medical hardship early on (knee) and helped out with recruiting until my time was up. Now, I do have some god stories

Does anyone else only want this thread to just become Charles telling us cool stories about him being recruited?

This is true and as adults, alot of us can't seem to get a grasp why kids can't be humble about themselves or try to keep low-key. Be real here, and this is for Charles as well, if these outlets were available to you as a 17 year old kid, I don't think there's anyone out there that can say that they wouldn't cherish the attention available to them.

Every generation thinks the ones after them are disrespectful and worse. "Back in our day, things were so much better" said every generation ever. I bet the recruits from the 60's thought the 80's guys were selfish or disrespectful. The only thing that's changed is the medium and now because of technology, we all know about. While i love technology, I've very glad we did not have camera phones and facebook when i was in college Now if you excuse me, I see some kids on my lawn.

Man you are doing it all wrong. My yard has booby traps all over so word has gotten around the neighborhood to stay the hell out of my yard. Unfortunately theres always that new family that just moved in down the street that didnt get the memo yet, but they all eventually learn over time lol
