Best way to remove rust

I have an older R1100. Just got a new stock and cleaned the entire inside of the gun. The barrell is faded and slight rust around it. Outside of getting it professionally redone, what are some ways to clean the barrel to remove rust.

Heavy Rust - navel jelly and steel wool...if you go this route you will have to reblue the gun after you are done.
lite surface rust - CLP Breakfree and very lite on the steel wool.

Light rust: Break Free CLP and a rag or fine steel wool.
Heavier rust: Mix a slurry of Mother's Mag Wheel Polish and BF CLP; apply w/ fine steel wool.

I'm in the same boat. I found a Ruger 10/22 when i moved into my house and it has a good bit of rust. I picked up a gun blue kit from academy that I'm going to try.

DON"T USE STEEL WOOL!
Use a fine bronze brush. You can find them in a shoe store. They are used for swayed shoes or coats. Also use some gun oil when brushing the rust area.

+1, the bronze will not hurt the blueing...

0000 steel wool used carefully will not hurt either...

I'd post a pic of my 10 BPS somebody set down in the marsh this year, but I'm scared to take it out of the case. I'm beyond steel wool, much less a bronze brush for my blue suede shoes.
Going to stick barrel in a bead blaster.

This.
If you don't get every damn particle of the steel wool off, it will rust.

I'm going to try using the buffing wheels we use for SS in the shop and see if it takes it off.

If you have that, I'd use some white compound (3M) just to see what you get.
It may not be abrasive enough.
You know how it is though, you can always go more, but you can't back up.

Quad 0. Or 0000 steel wool and a lube.

This is true.
I don't know about the bronze brush as I've never used one. It'd be embarrassing if I told you how many years I've been using fine steel wool to remove surface rust. By itself, properly used FINE (e.g. 0000) steel wool will NOT remove the bluing. Having said that, I'll add one caveat: if the rust is heavy enough, it's possible that the rust itself will have irreversibly damaged the bluing; if that's the case, whatever one uses to remove the rust could be misinterpreted as having removing the bluing, but that's not the case. If you want to use the bronze brush, that's fine; but DON'T be afraid that properly used steel wool will remove the bluing.
