A coworker and I had this discussion earlier. I think they are similar, but I think the Pelican's did a good job of keeping it more simplistic and not having too much detail. I think that is always a bad idea for a logo. The Hawks have way too much detail in their logo.

Even if that is not the logo, both franchises will be birds and both will have supposedly blue and red in their color scheme.
I know the Hawks aren't our rivals and aren't even in our conference but I hate all Atlanta teams.

While I see the similarities, when I see this Pelicans logo it makes me think of Airline Wings logos more so than the Hawks.
Then think of this Pelican as a mockery of the Hawks logo.
