I think they are similar, but I think the Pelican's did a good job of keeping it more simplistic and not having too much detail. I think that is always a bad idea for a logo. The Hawks have way too much detail in their logo.

I know the Hawks aren't our rivals and aren't even in our conference but I hate all Atlanta teams.
