| Louisiana senator asks if E. coli evolve into persons (Posted on 1/22/13 at 3:38 pm)
Well this is embarrassing for Louisiana. It's making it's rounds on the facebook as we speak
quote:
It’s a painfully familiar scene. A Louisiana state senator (Mike Walsworth) is asking a high-school science teacher about the teaching of evolution in class. He asks if there’s any direct example of evolution that can be taught in class. In response the science teacher settles on one of the most elegant and convincing experiments in evolutionary biology – Richard Lenski’s decades-long study in which he froze selected generations of E. coli bacteria while allowing others to evolve. The differences between the evolved and original bacterial populations clearly demonstrated evolution. At that point the good senator asks if the E. coli evolved into a person.

While this guy is clearly incredibly dumb when it comes to science, I can believe it. My dad is a businessman, and he's fantastic at it. He knows everything about business and can apply his knowledge. But when it comes to science, he hardly knows anything. All he knows is what he learned in school way back when. I don't think he'd say something as stupid as this senator, but I'm fairly certain he doesn't understand the science behind evolution. He doesn't keep up with all that stuff.

It is demonstrative of a problem with politicians and people in general. If you don't know what you're talking about, dont talk about it.

Normally people I agree with, but we, as a society, have mandated that anyone in office know all facets of everything. Granted it's not an entirely idiotic demand since they do vote on everything, but the premise that politicians shouldn't talk on stuff they don't know about flies right in the face of what they do. For example, Nancy Pelosi's fancy quote "We have to pass it to find out what's in it"

The mark of true intelligence is knowing what you know and what you don't. Not knowing something has nothing to do with intelligence. Not knowing that you don't know it does.

This clip was on TD last week with the article on the kid trying to repeal the law that let's teachers teach religion in the class room. He looked like an idiot but he was making a poor attempt at being sarcastic. They had a few clips of him looking like a dumb arse to the inth degree. I'm sure he wishes the had overslept that day.

I had a conversation almost exactly like this several years ago. I used the increase of tuskless elephants as my example of evolution (poaching being the sped up version of environmental changes) and a woman asked me "but did any of them turn into whales or humans"...? and then laughed at her "gotcha" moment.

It's understandable to not understand why something as complex as evolution is fact. It is not understandable to not only not understand why evolution is fact, but to argue against it.

They not only get into office. They get invited to the inauguration. Here is Shreveport Rep Barbara Norton. She had the Michelle Obama hair do before Michelle did :

I don't think the senator is really literally asking if humans evolved from E Coli. I think he is trying to determine whether or not the teacher believed in Progressive Creationism in which proponents believe that while the rest of biology (E Coli) evolved over time through evolution; humans were divinely created by God and have not evolved. He may have been clarifying types of creationism. Idk. Definitely alot more fun to call him an idiot.

Was he legitimately asking if the E.coli evolved into a person, or was he sarcastically asking the question to bring up the fact that a human being is much more complex? As someone who completely believes in evolution, I don't agree with the point that he is trying to make at all, but I can't believe he's that dumb.
