only inshore, all our rod/reels are 10+ years old so it's time to start rebuilding the arsenal

i'm looking at a shimano calcutta 400B with a shimano crucial

looking to get around 2-3 baitcasting and 2-3 spinning combos

i've got a 400 but i find it a little over kill for trout but it comes in handy for the occasional bull red or black drum. my favorite set up is my stratic 300 on my 7' st croix fast action. it has enough meat for avg reds and it perfect for trout.

I picked up a couple of the Shimano Sahara spinning reels when they were on sale for $40. I paired one with a St. Croix Mojo Inshore Medium rod and the other is on a Cabela's IM-7 tournament rod. (Medium Light)

Out of the two, I like the St. Croix rod a bit better but they will both handle just about anything I encounter in the marsh.

As for baitcasters, I have always enjoyed the Abu's and still have a couple CL3 6500's in use that are over 10 years old with minimal maintenance. Haven't made the jump to low profile's yet.

its an FI.
i really like the sensitivity of my st. croix but it is more sensitivity to rough treatment than some of my other rods.

All Star Classic - 6'6" Med Heavy $50
Abu Garcia 5600 C4 - $100
Berkeley 14 or 17 lb. mono. is all you need.

Everything else is overkill.

both at academy.

The Shimano line guide will eventually wear out due to being made of plastic. Garcia's is made of metal.

and will rust out. i had abu garcias when i was younger. they never broke down on me but i'd never go back to them again after using pens and shimanos.

never had one rust out or break down after using them in salt and fresh. And i don't take care of them. Used to tournament fish. Have 2 Garcia 5600 series that are 22 years old. Still work like new. Had a Shimano wear out in less than a year. Won't ever own another Shimano reel. Smooth, yes. Overpriced? yes. Just my opinion though.

I have a 6000 and 7000 for pier fishing for kings and cobia. I think they're great, but I'm not too rough on equipment.

my biggest complaint with the abu garcias was that they are built so loose/open and i always had grime and grit getting into them. it also seemed that they wouldn't hold grease or oil for any length of time.
i've got 15 shimanos of different sizes and models that i use for bass, bream, trout/reds, and snapper. all have been wonderful without any regrets.
must be that everyone has their favorites because my dad thinks anything but penn for saltwater fishing is crap. to each their own.

Mack..your dad is a smart man! Penns are great for hauling in big fish off the bottom. My father in law gave me a couple of Penns from back in the day to use on tuna rods. They are probably close to 50 years old and still work great.
