It's hard to tell, since the team is relying on the emergence of one or two contributors out of a potential pool of about 5 or 6 guys. Anything can happen in a situation like that, but my gut instinct is to expect a pitching staff nearly equal to, but not quite equal to, last season's staff.

Hitting will be the same I'm afraid.

As for this, I have no idea why anyone would think this. The team only lost 2 guys who had just awful, terrible years. The top 5 or 6 hitters are all coming back, and big things are expected from Bregman, McMullen, Laird, Barash, etc.

There's no way this team doesn't see a significant improvement in run production.

Yes, there are still lingering issues with the way the offense is coached, but that's a subject for another thread.

Obviously losing Gausman hurts but lets focus on who is actually on the team this year. Under Grewe I felt like the players never improved much. Hopefully Dunn can improve each one a little to give you a better all around staff. I'd love to see McCune turn it around like Coleman did but for every Coleman is a Mestepey and Meier who lost it.

Expectations are futile. I don't "expect" anything, like a BCS championship or CWS title, like some people do. I just like to watch Tiger sports.

Fall means nothing.

A player who goes through fall practice will tend to play better in the spring, but really, that's about all you can gather. The actual performances are almost totally meaningless.

As for people holding out hope for him, was there some kind of injury he received after the 2011 season? I know that pitchers who trend down tend to keep trending down, but nonetheless, pitching careers have been resurrected. It's not unheard of.

Just looked more like a continaution from last year to me. I hope he tears it up this spring, but I'm not expecting to count on him much.

How can you expect anything from what you saw in the fall? I just don't understand that mentality from people.

Nola and eades will be solid but u won't see the dominance like gausman displayed at times...will lemarche I think will be the Sunday starter by the time sec play rolls around. Solid staff top to bottom.

Because he didn't look any better than he did last season. I'm sure the coaches noticed it too.

That doesn't really answer the question.

So you're saying the coaches just have fall practice for fun? They make no determinations from it. I'd be willing to bet right now he is not of the pitchers the coaches would feel confident putting in in an important game.

I hate when people say that there is no way the staff can be better after losing a first rounder. It's college people. There will be turnover and new kids will step up significantly from year to year. I said this last year and I'll say it again, Nola will be as good or better than Gausmann. He has the "stuff" and posted better numbers than Guasmann as a freshman. His velocity is not quite there but his change up and control more than makes up for that.

As far as the offense for this team, it can't get any worse. We lost Hanover and Nola who were streaky at best. Ross really came around last year and our top 2 hitters are back. If Jones learned how to hit a breaking ball in the off season, look out. As far as the incoming freshman, who knows unless you watched them at the high school level but from reports and stats there are a few that could very well make an impact.

All in all we should be quite a bit more solid and consistent.

See you at the box!!!

To the extent that coaches use fall practice to sort out the good players from the bad, they probably shouldn't do that.

You can tell who the athletes are, and not much else. It makes players better to reduce the effects of the long layoff from summer to spring, but performance in fall has almost on bearing on performance in spring. At least that's been my experience.

I mean, shite, you have HOFers in MLB who were notoriously bad hitters in April ... in the regular season. What does that tell you about pre-pre-season?

I never he said he couldn't be good this season. But based on the way he performed during the fall and last season, I doubt the coaches are counting on him right now. That of course could change.

i would have to agree. you get plenty from fall ball. some players arent even the roster anymore because of their fall ball performances. maybe maineiri sees something that i dont, and its not like im rooting against the kid...ive just moved on expecting anything out of him and am just a tad shocked how a lot of people on here keeping holding on.

He's had 2 years. One was awesome. One disappointed. How are you shocked that people would still be holding out hope for him?

I'm not writing McCune off just yet. He was money his first year. He could return to form. It's not impossible.

Last year he didn't. But it doesn't mean that he can't come out this year and pitch like he did when he was a freshman. Matty Ott had a tremendously shitty sophomore campaign, but he came out and pitched fairly well his junior year.
