| Good homeowners insurance? (Have USAA for auto) (Posted on 1/18/13 at 2:16 am)
Are they as good as they are with auto? Looking at buying a home very soon. I don't have a clue what normal coverage is for a home.

USAA is good insurance and you'll get a big, big discount by insuring both home and auto with the same company.

They were twice as much as their competitors when I got a quote. Other than that I have no experience with their home policy.

I have them for homeowners. Filed a claim on refrigerator one time and they do replacement cost, not depreciated value. So I told them what model I had that broke and they gave me the money for what would be the same model today. MSRP as well.

I have them for both. Haven't had to make a claim with them, but I know they are very fast with payouts and have excellent customer service. Depending upon how much your home is valued at, location, amenities, etc. will depend upon your cost. I pay just over $1100 per year for homeowners insurance with USAA. Replacement value is right at $300K, obviously not including the land.

I have USAA for both. I have had equal positive experiences in claims with both. My opinion is the auto division is a little easier to deal with initially bc it is more standard choices. Two things make me say that, 1. They said they could not sell me a builders risk policy bc of this and that, and another company sold it to me under the same circumstances. That is the ins for when u are in process of building. 2. After building other companies were much lower with the amount they force u to insure. So, I have a home and lot that are combined say 300K. Call it 200k for home 100k for lot. All other companies would set my premium for 200k. Usaa would only insure if I bought 275k premium, but the premium is about the same price. So, I got better top end coverage for the same price, but they do hurricane damage deductible on % of coverage. So my hurricane deductible is quite a bit higher. In addition I've been a customer for 10+ yrs and have seen a decline in customer service. It is getting worse getting to a real person and someone who is knowledgable. Thankfully I don't have to call regularly, and the dividend return they give back every year makes any hassles easier to swallow. We even got a return on home ins after Katrina. It was small but came with a letter saying they still have a yearly return run intact.

I have both. Pay 1400 per year in East Baton Rouge parish homeowners. 300k 10 year old house. I also do all banking including mortgage and investments with usaa. They paid for us to evacuate after Gustav because we had an infant and no power for at least a week plus they put $500 into our checking account because we lost all the food in our fridge.

Thoughts on ballpark cost of 160k 20 year old house? It's in Arkansas so it's not I'm a hurricane area. Not in a flood area either.

I have USAA for auto and used them for my first home, paying only about $100 a month for a 2k sq/ft home. But when I moved into a larger home in the same suburb, the rates became ridiculous. I shopped around and found a policy with Travelers that was far more affordable. I'm now paying $250/month. If I were to switch to USAA, the lowest rate offered on their website is $390/month. This primarily comes from an estimated rebuild cost of $527K. My home is only worth $250K-$270K if I were to sell it. Maybe someone can answer a question that could help both of us. If my home were to be a total loss, and my insurance with Travelers only insures for a $300K rebuild, can I just take the check, buy a comparable house and sell the lot? Or does the check only come if I rebuild this house? If I get a check that I can use for anything, why wouldn't USAA allow me to insure for a lower replacement cost?

Just did on USAA site and it said cost to rebuild would be 206k, seems kind of low to me? Also, premium shows $128 a month and that seemed high.

I would call. The website has been higher in my experience. U should be around $100 a month though for a $200k rebuild. I also have had experience with two rebuild on burn downs. Neither were with USAA, but I will gauranty they would have done better than the two agencies I dealt with through my work. Their rebuild cost is based on a sqft amount they have for ur region to rebuild new. It should be higher than u need as the other poster and I are bitching about, so that shouldn't be a concern.

I have been with Progressive forever with auto insurance. I switched to USAA for house insurance. I checked their rates for auto and USAA told me they couldn't beat Progressive even with packaging the 2 policies. Maybe its because I have been with Progressive a long time but nobody has come within $500 a year of beating their rates for auto. USAA has good home owner's insurance rates.
