Or any dog with seizures in general...

Anyone have experience with this?

What can be done to help? Are there medications?

My beagle had one seizure in three years, the vet we talked to said that unless they're more frequent than one a month he doesn't recommend anti-convulsion medication. So yes there's meds you can give them but that's about all I know.

007mag's advice is good. We had a dog with seizures once, but they were very infrequent and the vet didn't want to use medication unless it worsened.
Of course that might depend on how severe the seizures are and other factors. I would talk to your vet about it.

A good friend of mine has a Lab that has seizures, he told me when it has one and he's there he gives it maple syrup or something like that and it will stop. Ill see if I can get more info from him.

I had a Boston Terrier that had seizures. Initially it was pretty tough to watch. Then, I realized there was nothing I could do, so I'd just sit back and enjoy the show and console the damn thing afterwards.

I have a border collie that used to get them frequently and still does if she gets overexcited due to weather or something. She stays with my parents so I don't know exactly what they give her, but I do think they give her something when they get frequent. They also give her something to keep her calm for bad weather.

Yep there is meds.. I got scared to death last yr in january my lab had one. One of scariest things to see because they are helpless.. Happend again the next month and i took her to vet. They said they wouldnt put on meds unless it happend often so just play it by ear.. Had one more in may, and hadnt had one since knock on wood. But vet said there are some good meds out there. Meds wont stop them but will stop how often they happen. Since mine isnt having them often there is really no sense in getting on meds

I also have a beagle that as experienced them as well. The vet said it is actually rather common in pure breed dogs. Also said it wasn't terribly serious. She had another one a couple of months after and we put her on meds, hasn't had one since.

I have had labs all my life. I when I got married, I got my "step-dog", a black lab named Macon who suffered from a type of canine epilepsy. We had to keep liquid valium in syringes on hand and stick them in his arse when he was having a seizure. He also had to take a doggy sized dose of valium every day. When he was about six, we moved, and the vet in our new town put him on potassium bromide. Shot a couple of CC's of the liquid on his food every night, and the problem stopped. We were told it was not good for him, but he lived to be 14. The stuff was a pain in the arse to get, had to have made at a compounding pharmacy. Not sure it is required for your dog with one seizure, but Macon was having 4-5 a year before we put him on it. Not sure a lot of vets know about it. 2-3 vets in our prior town never recommended it. Good luck, it is scary.

This is what we were told when we brought him in a couple years ago when he first had one.

He hadn't had but 2 or 3 since then and they were very spread apart. In the last 6 months or so, he's had several of them and who knows how many he's had while we're at work and he's outside.

Looks like a trip to the vet is in my future.

Did the dog get table scraps before it happened? My wife had a dog that would have them after eating any scraps with tomato sauce in it. Its a stretch but an easy fix if so.

Wife had a Chocolate Lab when we got married. Started having them all the sudden while we were gone during the day and did not know what was wrong with him until we saw him have one. Tried medicine but it made him very lethargic and sick. Eventually had him put down and found out he had a brain tumor…….Wife was devastated.

Alright y'all aint going to believe this shite.....but

Have you heard about if you have a kid with asthma to buy a Chihuahua and let it sleep with the child and it will take the asthma away from the child? yeah I don't believe it either....

any way, my wife has had epilepsy for going on 20 years after a bad car wreck, tried multiple meds but could never really get the seizures under control...until about 10 years ago... we got a yellow lab (that is the most spoiled thing in the world)and she sleeps with us, I have noticed the lab having small seizures regularly...but since we have had the dog the wife has not had one

told y'all you would not believe me

Our family has a Pomeranian that has seizures. I don't think she's had one in about a year, but she was a severe case. Before she got medicated for it, at times she had multiple ones a day, I mean as many as 5 or 6. Which with those kind of numbers it' don't look good for the dog. At first she started phenobarbital, but that had some bad effects on her, so they put her on zonisamide. The medicine has been real effective.

Thanks you all for the advice on the meds. I'll be taking him to the vet soon.

Another question to owners with labs or other floppy-eared dogs... What do yall use to keep their ears cleaned? My lab is always getting yeast buildup in his ears and it stinks really bad.

Someone has told me to use a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water to help keep away the yeast. I'm going to try that. Any other advice?
