The Nationals traded slugger Michael Morse to the Seattle Mariners in a three-way trade that netted them right-hander A.J. Cole, the pitching prospect who last winter served as the centerpiece of the trade that brought Gio Gonzalez from the Oakland A’s to the Nationals. The Mariners sent catcher John Jaso to the Oakland to complete the deal

UPDATE, 7:14 PM: CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler says the Nats will will also get two additional prospects.

UPDATE, 7:48 PM: Blake Treinen is one of those prospects, according to the Nationals. The other will be a player to be named later. Treinen, a righty, had a 4.37 ERA in 103 innings last year at High-A Stockton.

The NL East champion Nationals reacquired pitching prospect A.J. Cole, dealt from Washington to Oakland just 13 months ago in the trade for Gio Gonzalez. Washington also got pitcher Blake Treinen and a player to be named.

Jaso, 29, batted .276 with 10 homers and 50 RBIs but became expendable when Seattle signed Raul Ibanez to be its designated hitter, a move that shifts Jesus Montero from a catcher-DH split to primarily behind the plate. The AL West champion A's had Kurt Suzuki as their main catcher last season before trading him to the Nationals.

Mariners have so many DH-types and just added another. Morse is so injury prone and sucks in the field, would have rather hung onto Jaso.

A lot better was a stretch but Morales is a year younger, was healthier last season. Would be fine with adding Morse just not after they already got Morales and Ibanez this offseason. And Jaso is under contract for a few more years, not too many catchers who can hit righties like he can.

Each one has played over 145 games once in their career...

Morse 2011: .303/.360/.550 31 HR 95 RBI 36 BB 126K
Morales 2009: .306/.355/.569 34 HR 108 RBI 46 BB 117K

These two are similar if anything, neither is above and beyond the other

Even last year they were rather similar
Morse: .291/.321/.470
Morales: .273/.320/.467
